new drug. alley goreman has the story one of man who is living proof. >> reporter: phillies fan cork y corky -- >> i started hemorrhaging. >> reporter: it took six months until doctors realized corky had melanoma, meaning it spread through the his body. they surgically removed some tumors but wouldn't take all of them. doctors say current treatments for melanoma typically don't work very well. so instead of receiving traditional chemotherapy, corky was able to get into early trials. testing a new drug known as rg-7204. it targets a genetic mutation half of all melanoma patients have. called b-raf, b-raf drives cancer growth. >> this is what you take twice a day. >> reporter: corky says the new drug is easy to take, four pills, twice a day. but he is even happier about what it has done to his tumors. >> three of them just seemed to disappear. >> reporter: he had no new tumors pop up since taking the drug. this doctor at penn's cancer center says the best results from previous drugs for melanoma was a 20% response rate. with rg 7204. >> 80% of patients benefited in some way with some form of tumo
