because when the kids said we wanted a new playground, we hired ron. he is one of the top playground designers in the world. he's done a lot of amazing things. he came over here and he said, my vision of a school playground is just a big pile of dirt that kids can play in and create whatever they want, that i admire the creativity of kids. and i thought maybe that wasn't going to go over very well. but ron is still after that idea. then we came up with a huge vision for what the playground could be. then the kids who were here before you said we don't like that. that's not a very good idea. we said, fine, why don't we work together. so we created a class where those kids could work with us and ron. for a year they designed the playground you now have. so this playground is designed by the students of the middle school. that is pretty cool. if you're liking it and feeling like they made the right decisions, you should really congratulate them. if you don't like the decisions they made, they're right over there at george washington, and you can go talk to

having the work done in the change order is to deliver completed site for the community with a new playground, picnic area and restroom. as you can see -- oh. presentation. sorry. as you can see on the screen, a portion of the site directly overlaps between the restroom project and the playground. and it's at a critical point which is at the entrance. this is our ada entrance. if we were executing the contract in this manner, it would be challenging to potentially have two prime contractors sharing a site and we also didn't want to delay the project any longer. additionally we think the approach can save the project money by using a contractor that is already mobilized on site. it will allow us to better balance, cut and fill soil on the site. finally, we have a confirmed price from a contractor and don't have to go through the uncertainty of bidding the project separately. on the price, i would like this add that approximately 20% of the costs for the restroom work is actually the restroom itself. and 80% of the cost is the utility work and the site work. and i have a graphic to show is that

it's 105 years ago in 1914 in new york city, a police commissioner named arthur woods looking at these millions of children streaming in and there were no playgrounds. so he directed his police officers to go and find vacant lots. he did that and he would station a police officer at a vacant lot and the kids were free to go and play. they ran out of vacant lots. so they started what they called the play streets program. what he did was cordoned off blocks in man hat tan. he would barricade off a street. that program grew into the new york police athletic league at that time, eventually the athletics league. they had a famous guy on their board of directors, babe ruth. that program spread around the east coast. in 1954 there was an officer named joe martin. he was working in the louisville, kentucky, department. he was approached by a 12-year-old boy who told him that his bike had been stolen and he wanted to go out and get the bullies. officer martin told him he wouldn't do that, but he would teach him how to box if he came down to the gym. the boy came down and between 1950 and 1960 he won golden gloves championships. he went to rome and he was a

new district. as chris said. our services focused on cleaning, maintenance and public safety. key services for us are the garage greeter at the civic center garage and playground safety monitors. last year and the year before we held a safety summit inn vitting the entire community be to market street. a few stats here. we have many, many more on the website. we are pressure watching 46,000 linear feet per year removing 60,000-tons of trash per year. our needle numbers are back up to 1,000 each month. they dipped for a while. they are on the rise again. we had seven free community events in 2018. we begun construction of the cafe and civic center plaza celebrating the one-year anniversary this month. we held the civic center plaza tree lighting on december 5th. this year it will be wednesday, december 4th, same time, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and we are really busy with the launch of the renewal campaign for the district which we successfully completed in july of this year. thank you. >> thank you. thankings for the presentation and the good work. we can go to public comment. they members of the public to testify opthis item? seeing none, public comment is closed. col
