that comes as the new poll shows president obama has taken a hit. ating now at 41%. a 9-point drop from just last month. an all-time low for the president in the cbs/new york times poll. cnbc chief washington correspondent john harwood is joining me now. >> good morning, chris. >> the president's approval rating was going up and up and in the blink of an eye a staggering 9-point drop. what turned things around so quickly, do we snow in. >> well, first of all, we don't know for sure he's really at 41%. one poll was an indication, you got to wait to see it affirmed by others. gallop has it at 49%. we had him in our nbc/wall street poll at 49%. but assume as in the washington poll/abc news poll that showed him at 46% and going down, he's taken a hit in the last few days, and partly that's clearly a result of gas prices, which is very much in the news and very much in people's pocketbooks. and the president has got a vulnerability there and has a vulnerability on the economy broadly, that's one of the reasons he could be bringing this trade case against

we look at the new national polls out, fox news polls, you can see that the horse race and the governe difference between february and now. it's important to point out that this poll happened before the results last night. any momentum that may have been gained for santorum and alabama or mississippi with the wins would not be reflected in this poll. as you take a look at the race for republican nomination, which candidate would you prefer can beat obama? 58%. true conservative, 31%. in the g.o.p. voters, what effect has this campaign had on the party and its candidat candidates? dividened and weakened the party 62%. we're back with the panel. susan, what do you make of the fallout from last night? and what you see in the numbers? >> well, i think, first of all, santorum was going to do well in a southern state. romney was right saying he is in an away game. not sure it's a function of who is the genuine conservative here. santorum really connects with people in a way that governor romney doesn't seem to do. i'm from western new york. when santorum talk about being from coal country,

this as we new polls in. fox news polls, the president's approval rating, as you see here now, 47%. poll. next question, his handling of the economy. approval, 42%. disapprove, 54%. and this, president obama's handling of gas prices. approval, 26%. disapproval, 61%. also the majority said the president is to blame for gas prices. let's bring in our panel. jonah, kirsten powers and charles krauthammer. jonah, the president is out almost every other day, it seems, talking about gas prices. is it a sign that this white house is concerned about this issue? what does it tell us? >> i think it tells us they're in something of a panic over it. we've seen his poll numbers drop precipitously and you can't prove it, but most people think the gas thing is a major driver of it. and the problem is that he basically beyond doubling down, he's tripling down on the same stuff he was saying three years ago and it's fundamentally incoherent. he's saying that we need to switch to wind and solar and this is vital for our energy strategy, except we don't use wind and solar to move cars in this country. o
