>>> i'm joined by chris hughes, the new publisher and editor and chief of the "new republic" magazine. hughes is also of course the co-founder of facebook and bought "the new republic" last year with the aim to print digital media for the age. thanks for coming. >> thanks for having me. >> you just interviewed the president along with your editor. how did he strike you? how would you describe his attitude, his approach to a second term? a sense of confidence as he seeks to build legacy but also achieve some real accomplishment. >> well, there are a couple things. i mean, in the interview in the oval office itself he was very careful and very thoughtful in each one of the responses and really wanted to choose the words right. the words he chose particularly when it came to the second term and his relationship with republicans were at least to me seemed like a very different obama than four years ago. he seemed much more -- i won't say combative but certainly much ready to go to congress and say what he believed in, push for his agenda and use the power of the presidency to try to build

in the print culture, that is what the new republic defended by firing glass. truth. i was wondering, as you take over this magazine, what does your fact checking process look like and are you writing a new code of ethics? in that code of ethics, how are you taking into account trying to read these two cultures? >> fact checking is incredibly important to what we do for two reasons. one, whatever we are publishing, we want to make sure the fact that we are siding are right. -- are citing are right. it is incredibly important for us as a company, for our brand. when the key differences between us and a lot of the other places you can find content on the web is that we do have a brand. we do have a history. people have to be able to trust the facts are right. whether it is with stephen glass or a couple of other episodes, there have been lapses at the new republic historically. as a result, people are being even more on their toes to ensure that that does not happen anymore. we have a pretty rich -- robust reporter-researcher program. they are fact checking their work. s

one of the things that i want the new republic to do, and i think the we started doing this in the newones in the past couple of weeks is to build the type of technology that adapts to help consumers are reading and consuming the content today. and this is going to be a constant ongoing project. it's not like we do it once and then we are all done simply because how many devices. how many different ways of consuming content there are in 2013. but we have tried to get out to help people are reading. what does that mean? while we still have a print edition, a vast of the to majority of people publish first. we have to million monthly coming and even before we've redesigned web site, over 20% of the folks were coming to us from mobile devices. as we have built now in html 5 project without giving out a little bit too much is responsive to the browser that you are using. so we are using the same content management systems and the same things on the back end but when a reader goes to let me know if you are on your iphone or android device or ipad or computer and immediately change screen re

do you know the new republic? do you think it is liberal or conservative? 24% of people said conservative and 22% said the liberal. now as an owner of a magazine it's interesting when in washington and new york a lot of folks will say they used to support the editorial board and the iraq format or this and that and it's a very conservative. other people will have the opposite viewpoint and what i always end up saying is we don't have a party line anymore. we have a lot of reporters and a lot of different opinions and hopefully each one of them can help, some of them you love and hate that some of them will change how you think about the world around you. >> for you going to write a column or have anything in an explicitly? >> i haven't yet. i talk about the business. i'm spending most of my time on the business but it's also important in an initial period that i didn't buy the new republic and i'm not here to amplify my own voice or my own editorial positions. i did it to in power the people that do this for a living. >> identify yourself, please. >> i'm the

for us at the new republic, before social media we would have had to have relied on just our brand to have people come in and type new republic.com into their browser or into google which as much as i would love that everyone is like, you know, bookmarking us and constantly coming to our home page, a lot of times it's just not realistic. whereas with social media because we enable the people who are reading our stuff to share it and to attract a larger and larger following, it means that we've been able to bring in a lot younger of a demographic, a lot of readers that had not known the brand before but who are excited and who are interested in reading it. over 20% of our traffic is now coming from, um, twitter and facebook and readit, and that's about double what it was a year ago. and part of that, i think, is our social media strategy, but to be honest with you, i think a lot of that is just the evolving nature of the internet and the way that people discover, discover our don't. our content. another data point on this is that pew has been doing some incredibly great research on rea

the president sat down, did an interview with the new republic, and new republic asking the president gun? the president said, yes, he goes skeet shooting all the time at camp david. there were skeptics. those who said that, you know, does he really scoot shokeet sh? there is criticism ever since. are you surprised they released this? >> i thought they should have released it right away as soon as the president mentioned it in that interview he likes to do skeet shooting when he's up at camp david and then there was, you know, i think marcia black burn, the republican congresswoman, from tennessee, said, if he does that, why don't they release a picture? they should have released the picture, said, here's the picture, you see the president likes to do this once and a while. white house officials acknowledge he's not a hunter, he's not a major sportsman as far as guns are concerned, but once in a while you go up to camp david, i've been to camp david, it is a huge, huge area. you want to do some skeet shooting, skeet shooting, you can do some skeet shooting. i'm sure he's not a pro at

[laughter] but that hasn't stopped president obama from piling on, telling the new republic, "if i had a son, i'd have to think long and hard before i let him play football." oh, really, sir? well football doesn't want your imagery son because he throws like an imagery girl. [ laughter ] sadly, the spectre of childhood brain damage threatens the future of football. so clearly, we have to immediately address this crisis by talking about something else. this is "the sport report." ways to echo back some of their talking points, and in this story, in this interview that the new republic about the need to appeal towards hispanics in particular. there's a fox news website that's devoted to the latino audience and they're talking about potentially doing some streaming video. so this is not insignificant. i don't think we can just brush aside either what fox news is doing or what the republican party is doing. it's going to be a painful process for them to do some of the real sort of repositioning that goldie is talking about they're needing to do to be competitive. i'm talking both about the republican party and to a lesser extent fox news. there are forces within both that don't want to see a whole lot of change and they are going to stamp their feet loudly if they see a significant redirection. but at least in the case of the republican party it seems as if there is a significant internal push for that and a belief that that is what is necessary in order to be competitive going forward into 2014 and 2016. >> goldie, let me play you something a republican strategist sa
