we're not the new selma. i think that that really, it gets to this thing where when you try to talk about race, african-americans are used to. we have to talk about race all the time. a lot of white americans aren't comfortable with it, don't want to be seen as making decisions based on race. you're looking at a jury where there aren't african-americans on it. what you're saying to these women, i know you're not deciding this on race. i'm taking that off of your shoulders. >> we're going to talk about this more next hour. one more question to joy on this point. it's kind of a sensitive subject. is it essentially he doesn't think white people, they can't handle this? >> he wants that burden off their shoulders so they can say, we really made this case on the efs den ef evidence. he wants hem to know if the races of these two were reversed, you know how this would go. he's giving with one hand and taking with the other. i think the context is, this is the south. >> the other part is he's rebutting the defense's

we don't want to be defined as the town where trayvon martin died and the new selma and the new you birminghampeople were saying last year. a city of 65,000 people. not a big city. not a rich city. sanford is the county seat of seminole county florida. which is the wealthiest of the counties in florida but you sanford is the poorest city in the county and the poorest city in florida. a small police force. a strange place and right next door is lake marry that is affluent. craig melvin talked about the part that was forcibly absorbed into sanford. they brought the cities in sort of against their will and there has been this tension between goldsborrow which maintained its own name and sanford proper. the police force has the long negative ugly history with the black community in sanford. all of that was sort of bunched into the trayvon martin case. this case dragged in issues that had nothing to do with george zimmerman and thog to do with trayvon martin. all of the history burst into the open when this happened. the city has done through a lot. you talk to people and they just want it to be ov

and i was going from southwest georgia through atlanta back to selma, when we heard that he had been shot. i came to newk, attended the service for him. >> what is your assessment of the significance of malcolm x? >> i think malcolm played a major role in helping to educate, inform and dramatize the need for mass movement. people read about him. many of the young people, black and white, read his story. many did not agree necessarily with his techniques or his tactic. but if malcolm had lived, i am convinced that he would have been part of the southern nonviolent wing of the civil rights movement. >> and his relationship with dr. king? what did dr. king think? >> i remember malcolm being in the hotel, before we even saw him in kenya, the night of the march on washington-the evening before the march on washington. he was at the hilton hotel in washington. now, he didn't like the way the march turned out, because he said it was like a picnic and that it was not strong enough. >> and he wasn't invited to speak. >> he was not invited to speak. we -- i didn't have anything to do with that decision. >> after

new legislation if the laws aren't approved in advance by the federal government? yesterday in the senate congressman john lewis, a house member and a civil rights icon who marched in selmat since the supreme court decision there have already been new signs of trouble. >> only hours after the decision was announced by the supreme court before the ink was even dry, states began to put into force efforts to suppress people's voting rights. >> no one's right to vote in any part of this great nation should be suppressed or denied, yet we continue to see that discriminatory practice today. >> reporter: well, the supreme court said, in fact, in the nine states that had to have their election laws preapproved by the feds, there's been dramatic improvement, in some cases parity with minority voters in terms of a per capita situation. this is not going to be easy to draft this legislation. doing so in the midst of all the scandals, investigations, gridlock on the budget, the potential of a government shutdown and still more automatic spending cut, it's going to be pretty tough to get this thing done. jenna: what exactly is happening in the house today in relation to all of that?
