sun's former chairman is going from old tech to new tech with a company start the out as social media but becoming something else. how do they handle the challenge of old tech? former sun microsystems steve mcnally. scott, thank you very much for being here. what does wayan do? >> so computers are old tech, huh? david: in the realm, in the whole realm of things, you know what i'm saying. >> i'm feeling old. anyhow, what wayan does, what we're trying to do is take advantage of social media, user generated content to make it valuable. there are two things you can do on the internet. you can create content that people watch stories and entertainment. the other thing that happens on the internet people are trying to match buyers with sellers through advertising models. people, 92% of the people trust recommendations from people they know. and, 70 plus percent of people trust and believe in, think it is credible of user generated social media content. we're taking that crowd noise called social media, and we allow to go in and search. we ingest 5500 tweets on facebook an instagram posts a

new tech is totally different. earnings hiccups we saw at companies like twitter or yelp -- the stocks sold off in part because of the company's own inexperience in dealing with growth. and basically it allowed investor expectations to get to a point or they could not deliver. alix: linkedin and yelp got hammered after earnings. how do you parse the new tech world? how do you find value versus growth, and define the risk? jason: there is large-cap tech that people consider to be value stock with low pe, such as apple. the valuation seemed reasonable. within growth technology, some companies have high p s -- high p's on current earnings, but you do not have to look out that far. an example might be facebook. finally, there are tech stocks that are overvalued. there are areas we would avoid. twitter is an example. you feel like there have been too many management changes, too much changing of the metrics they used to measure themselves. alix: m&a? yahoo! has bought over 50 companies so far. jason: there will continue

he crunched numbers in a new tech report for kleiner perkins and you had some interesting findings. 27ups have been cofounded by designers including instagram, airbnb, youtube. 13 agencies were fired by tech companies in the last four years. and six firms were hired last year including you, john. you are the very first. either perkins was the first to bring in design partners. john: they were more out there. emily: what is going on and why? design is important, but why does it seem like they are just getting this now? john: technology alone was a good reason to buy things. suddenly, we had the stuff. design comes in to help more people want the stuff. emily: what do we mean by a term designer? not just someone who went to art school. john: it is pretty complex. we are changing the definition of design. it's not just 1000 people, but millions of people at this moment through apps and things like that. emily: the ceo of airbnb, i talked to him about this issue. silicon valley did not think a designer could build and run a company. they were straight up about it. we were phd students from
