perspective that i guess that i bring is working directly with families and communities, not just new town directly, but new haven and other locations or around the country post-9/11. our team has been involved with lots of awful events. i was thinking, when i first went to new town on friday evening that i was having a bit of deja vu because it reminded me of jonesboro in the early 1990's, with the multiple satellites. as i have been listening i have been thinking about what it is that is so particular. why are we even having this meeting? there are obvious reasons that are enormously informative. one way thinking out -- one way to think about next steps going forward is why this is such a special topic for all of us. not just as journalists, but as human beings. not to overuse the word trauma, but we use it as an anchor point. we define that from a clinical point of view. as a traumatic event that is highly anticipated, overwhelming, and leaves a sense of danger and out of control. so much so that the event and the experience changes the way we think. it is one of the reasons why there a

new voters who were suddenly eligible both to serve their country in the military and to have a say in how their country was run. that idea was not universally celebrated in this country. in college townston, kentucky, to middlebury, vermont, they sued to try to stop the local students from voting. they sued in new jersey and mississippi and pennsylvania and texas. they sued in michigan. it happened almost everywhere. and almost everywhere the courts found that if anybody over age 18 could vote, and vote where they lived, well that applied to college students too. college students over the age of 18 have a constitutional right to register and vote from where they are living to go to school. when one of those lawsuits ended up at the california supreme court, the court wrote these few lines of emphatic poetry, basically in taking the voting right side. quote, america's youth entreated, pleaded for, demanded a voice in the governance of this nation. on campuses by the hundreds, at lincoln's monument, by the hundreds of thousands, they voiced their frustration at their electoral impotence and their love of a country which they believed to be abandon its ideals. many more worked quietly an

[laughter] but that is where i got my start in journalism. i was not great at reporting. i was an english major and went into journalism because i wanted to write, but i learned that writing is not the key skill in journalism. talking to people is the key skill. sometimes you have to talk to people who are intimidating or hostile. good reporters are able to do that indeed there train of thought and not get flustered. i was not good at that. after i became a columnist but was still dealing with news events, in 1982 i was in new hampshire writing columns about the new hampshire presidential primary. i spen
