you're a longtime observer of new york politics. you live in new york.sense, as i did, that he was perhaps thinking down the road that he could make a political comeback at some point assuming he gets his personal life straightened out? >> well, i think like most politicians he was keeping his options open. i mean, my experience with politicians is ambition dies when they do, so he's got -- he's a young man. only 46 years old, but, you know, i think that is really off in the future, if at all. you know, the other factor as a new yorker that i would like to point out that this district, unlike a lot of other congressional districts in this area, is not an overwhelmingly democratic district. there are many districts in new york city where the democrat wins 80%, 90% of the vote, but against token opposition anthony weiner only won 60% of the vote in 2010, and it is not inconceivable that a well-financed republican challenge could make this a very competitive race in the special election that governor cuomo has to call in the next 70 or 80 days, so the democ

david joins me now from new york. this was a republican-led senate that actually gave the deciding votes last night. the first time we've seen that in this country. but democrats had to do some deal-making. >> there was likely some horse trading, you're right, t.j., that was happening behind the scenes. the legislative session ended on monday and we extended it all the way out to friday without a deal. it was only until late friday night when governor cuomo signed this bill almost at the strike of midnight that the same-sex marriage bill actually became law. it will take effect in about 30 days. cuomo may have had some political capital to burn. it was with the republicans. he enacted some belt-tightening measures earlier this year without raising taxes, but he also enacted a sort of widespread state campaign that many people who have been studying this have said that it just simply wasn't the same case two years ago when the bill failed in new york state senate. here in new york, there are celebrations, and the posit

iowa, new york, vermont, and new hampshire.t and the district of columbia. so six states and the district of columbia allow same-sex marriage. if you look at the map as well, seven additional states allow either civil unions or domestic partnerships. new jersey, illinois, hawaii, california, nevada, washington and oregon out on the west coast. how do people feel nationally? gallup has a recent poll that shows 53% of americans say, yes, same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. 45% of americans say no. if you look, gallup breaks it down by party affiliation. 69% of democrats say yes. that's up a bit from last year. 59% of independents say yes, same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. but look at the number among republicans. fewer than 3 in 10 republicans say yes. same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. 28% of republicans say yes. this year, exactly the same number a year ago. so will there be a national impact from new york's same law allowing same-sex marriage. christine quinn is the speaker of the new york city co

that's a major civil rights victory. ( cheers and applause ) new york, finally, new york state's gay and lesbian community are free from the burden that was having to set foot in connecticut in order to get married. ( applause ) really? the nuptials are in stam forward? mmmm. yes, it was last friday night at 10:30 p.m. eastern gay rights time after a week of tense negotiations and protests featuring brutal gay versus jew bull fighting, the senate in al bany finally made an honest state of new york by a vote of 33 for destroying society as we know it and 29 against. the vote was in doubt right up until the last minute. as of thursday, the state senate was dead locked 31-31. marriage rights supporters had to find at least one more republican to flip. and then up stepped mark grisanti, state senator from buffalo, who had run on a platform of banning gay marriage. here's what he had to say. >> as a catholic i was raised to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. >> jon: so we'll move on from there. maybe they'll find a vote from someone who doesn't appear to be on elliott nes

new york representative anthony weiner is set to resign today over a sexting scandal he initially lieds confirmed that weiner will hold a news conference at 2:00 p.m. eastern in brooklyn. it is part of his district. and that is where cnn's mary snow, she is standing by. mary, i understand you've been talking to folks there. what do they say? do they think he should stay? go? >> some of the people he spoke with today, suzanne say they are very sorry to hear he is resigning, but a couple people said, you know, the pressure he was under both from politicians and from the press, under daily scrutiny, he felt they didn't have a choice, but he also said he felt they wouldn't be effective. just to give you a sense of how popular he was, we've been talking to many people here throughout the past couple weeks, and these are both, you know, republicans and democrats saying this, just a few weeks ago it was widely viewed that anthony weiner was the front contender for -- to be mayor in 2013. he had a lot of support in new york city. so this is something that is really hard to believe just a few w

the other states look to new york for the progressive direction. >> new york is now the sixth state that allows same sex marriages. it is the most populous state to do so. the new york law doesn't have any residency law requirements. this is key. people from all over the country could now possibly go to new york and be married. this is also the first time a state senate with the republican majority has approved such a bill. the vote was close. 33-29. cnn's mary snow has more from new york. >> reporter: in the end, this historic bill came down to four republicans who broke from their party in support of same sex marriage, there was an eruption of applause in the senate gallery. >> usa. >> reporter: the republicans were able to secure protections for religious organizations. democratic governor andrew cuomo signed the bill. there were staunch opponents and new york bishop anthony dolan says this is immense. it will take 30 days before same sex couples can apply for marriage licenses. mary snow, cnn, albany, new york. >> we will be hearing from new yorkers on the passing of the controversia

he is anthony weiner's fellow democrat from new york. so happens to be in an important position politically. he's in charge of getting democrats elected in 2012. he called and said he's going to resign, he gave him the news. i'm told from a source that's familiar with this conversation, he went to nancy pelosi said, you've got to hear this, and the two went over to a tree to have some privacy, because, of course, the white house picnic was quite crowded, and then weiner proceeded to talk to both of them. i'm told he said he would resign and that he apologized for being a distraction. i'm told he was very remorseful about what he had done to his family, to his colleagues, to the party, and, you know, kyra, i was told by several sources, many sources over the past few weeks, who had spoken to anthony weiner, that he was really, really emotional. one says he was in despair, the other said he was turbulent. i'm told in this conversation he was more clear-headed in quite some time, where he would resign. at that point i'm told he had not even
