in jersey, access to cash in the northeast and controversy nixes sunday's running of the new york city marathon. that and more tonight on "n.b.r.!" we begin with jobs. employers beefed up their payrolls last month, adding more jobs than expected as more americans counted themselves among the labor force. the official labor department count shows 171,000 jobs were created last month. that's much stronger than the 125,000 analysts were looking for. and the government revised its september new job count up to 148,000. thanks to more people looking for work, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.9%. darren gersh has the story from washington d.c. >> reporter: the october employment report makes it clear a jobs recovery is solidly underway. >> i think the key message there is that employment growth has been taken up a notch. over the last three months we've added over 170,000 jobs on average. that's a little bit better than what we've been seeing. that is enough over the long haul to bring the unemployment rate down, but slowly. >> reporter: one of the best things about this jobs report: payroll

new york city. a short time ago, mayor bloomberg reversed course and announced sunday's running of the new york city marathon is cancelled. bloomberg came under sharp criticism for not canceling the race. in the aftermath of hurricane send, the city is still recovering from the massive storms and killed 40 people in new york alone. many are still without power. the transportation in the city has been snarled. the resources would have been diverted for the marathon and they're needed to help the city recover from sandy. >>> mntime, the heart of new york is slowly beating as recovery from sandy picked up a bit. the cleanup is breeding frustration, though, and desperation. millions of people without power, gas, food, drinking water, hurricane sandy not being blamed on 96 deaths in the united states. 570,000 homes and businesses are without power. could be several more days before electricity is completely restored and a gas shortage loom across the state and into neighboring new jersey. many say the situation is overwhelming. >> we have no water at all, no electricity. it's difficult and rough. >> it's terrible

new york city? >> reporter: yeah, in fact, jeff, they decided after days of controversy to now cancel the new york city marathon this weekend, deciding it's a time to stop, stay, and help instead of run in the city. you can see what is left of an older part of the boardwalk behind me here in atlantic city. so many communities from lower manhattan through here in atlantic city, up and down the east coast, all struggling, trying to find some way to come back right now. heavy equipment helps to steer the difficult recovery. power lines are slowly going back up. but many places are still overmatch bird the devastation sandleft behind. >> this is well beyond what any of us ever imagined. >> reporter: the long road to recovery now literally lined with hundreds of thousands struggling to survive. the lines stretch for blocks if you're lucky, but more often for miles. people waiting in traffic or for a ride on the limited public transportation available. hundreds hanging out just to charge their phones. >> don't be difficult, man. >> reporter: but the longest and most contentious lines stretch from the few stations tha

new york governor andrew cuomo temporarily waiving registration requirements for fuel distributors and transporters. after a day of increasing controversy of the new york city marathon, michael bloomberg announced it has been canceled. quote, we would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. we cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event, even one as meaningful as this, to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track. with the red cross, fema and the national guard on the ground to help in staten island, people there have some hope. we get the latest from nbc news correspondent andrea canning. >> >> reporter: good evening. this morning all of that changed. >> today a welcome flood of relief as national guard, fema, red cross and other agencies set up camp bringing much needed supplies to this hard-hit working class community. >> thank you fema. >> reporter: 24 hours after this desperate plea on live television. >> you need to come here and help us. we need assistance. please. >> reporter: there is now hope. >> re

at this time is to say that we will not be conducting the 2012 ing new york city marathon> it's official. sunday's new york city marathon is off, canceled in the wake of hurricane sandy. i have two of the runners with me who would have run. michael weisman is a marathon veteran but his house was wiped out by sandy. michael, welcome to you. obviously you're looking forward to the race. you've run it four times before. but there's your wife and two children and house in manhattan beach, long island which was completely destroyed by sandy. the moment that happened on monday night, did you think and assume that the race would get canceled? >> i had to assume. first of all, i no longer have running shoes or running clothes to use. but the amount of devastation on our front porch which is about 10, 15 feet higher than the ground floor, and watching the water overlap our cars, transformers blowing and you're seeing people fleeing from porch to porch trying to help each other out, you're saying there's no way this marathon will occur because we can't recover from this that fast. >
