i wanted you to see an absolute number, how much the new york, new jersey metro area north all other metro areas. so you can't even see chicago, detroit, boston. all of those metro areas are under 25,000 cases. you can see that the new york-new jersey metro area is almost 250,000 when you bring those cases together, almost a log more. that's why you hear us talking a lot about the metro area of new york and new jersey in the counties of rockland and westchester and suffix. why we are so focused on getting resources that metro area. if i can see the next slide. if i take new york and new jersey metro area out, this is the other metro areas we've been tracking very closely. i wanted to show this to you so you can see how those curves are already starting to plateau. if you look at detroit, philadelphia, louisiana. louisiana is in green. detroit is in grave. you can see across the board -- detroit is in gray. the higher concentration of individuals. ths what the american people in these large cities have done where it's more difficult often to socially distance. we are really impressed b

new york has recorded 15,200 deaths in new jersey about a third of that. after newk and new jersey the death total declined dramatically. you wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen. new york and new jersey have dense urban areas but are not the biggest states. our three biggest states have been relatively lightly touched. california, which is by far the largest has seen just 1,268 deaths out of a population of 40 million. texas, number two has had only 517 deaths. florida 867. for perspective about 4,000 americans die every year from choking on their meals. so why is this happening? or more precisely in so many places why is it not happening? why are the numbers so skewed toward the urban north east? the answer is nobody is really sure but we should try to find out. if half of all americans killed in vietnam came from new york to new jersey we could probably get a close look at how they were conducting the draft. we ought to figure out what it is and let's hope we do. but for now what's clear, this virus is concentrated not simply in a handful of states but in a

new york has suffered as part of this crisis. this is the epicenter of the crisis. it is not really just new york. new jersey next door also has the second largest number of coronavirus cases. and new york, new jersey and connecticut, all three of those states saw their single biggest -- biggest increase in deaths in one day. we also know that new york and new jersey now account for more than half of the coronavirus deaths all across the country. now, there is some possible good news and that is that the curve could be flattening. that's according to new york mayor -- governor andrew cuomo who said the number of hospital admissions is dropping. the number of people receiving breathing tubes is dropping. and the increase in the rate of cases each day is -- appears to be flattening. this is at least some good news as we approach this, cuomo saying you have to look at the rolling average, three-day average to make sure that we can see whether this is a trend or not. >> yep. athena, thank you. we'll have you back in a little bit because we want to focus on the disparity here and why so many more african-american
