when you say new york city schools were open -- >> no, no, new york state. >> i live in new york city state schools, most new york state schools were open for most of the year. and what happened is that i was on cuomo's reopening committee and we had the kind of protocols that kept a lot of people safe for a lot of the time. there's a tremendous amount of disinformation and distrust, particularly in upstate new york. and what the union is trying to do, and that's part of why we put $5 million out there as part of this get out, get back to school campaign, is to try to overcome this doubt, this disinformation. think about it, just last week i was on "meet the press" with chuck todd and i had a 20 minute interview and it was clear that we were about getting back to school and trying to make sure that everyone felt safe and comfortable. and fox took one word i used and said i was hedging. this is about trying to create the climate where everybody feels that they are safe and welcome back to school. >> okay, but how about spending that 5 million bucks on the kids who are behind in a year'

joining me now new york state senator alessandra biaggi and new york state assembly member john t. mcdonald iii. thank you both for joining. it's a very important topic and i'm so happy that you're both here to discuss. so state senator biaggi, i'm going to start with you. you used to work for governor cuomo and you've been open about feeling uncomfortable around him even after you left the job. what is your reaction to this report? >> i mean, first i want to say that i commend the brave women who came forward. it took an incredible amount of courage to report their interactions with the governor and their instances of sexual harassment. and i think that what the a.g.'s report confirmed for many of us was really what most of us knew to be true, that the governor has fostered and upheld a toxic work environment that is harmful to women. his staff has perpetuated this toxic environment. and now what's concluded as we all know is there were violations of both federal and state law. so his actions ultimately have become an abuse of power and
