we'll go live to the new york stock exchange in about 15 minutes for the latest. >>> top local story, from now the woman hayward police say killed a nursing student is expected to make a court appearance. gizelle esteban was arrested for the disappearance of michelle le. she has long been a person of interest in this case. terry mcsweeney is live at the hayward police department with the very latest. >> reporter: esteban was actually arrested the day after michelle le disappeared back in may. they talked to her, released her and now re-arrested and they feel they have a mountain of circumstantial evidence to convict esteban. take a look at the suspect, 27-year-old gizelle esteban, you see a picture and unrelated court appearance, under arrest for michelle le that disappeared from kaiser hospital parking garage. her body has still not been found. police are hoping they can get a conviction. they revealed the evidence, surveillance video from the garage showing her before and after and tennis shoes found with dna evidence and cellphone evidence. >> cellphone records shows that michelle'

: the federal reserve is not in the business of disappointing this place, but here at the new york stock exchange today, investors weren't happy with the latest gifts from the central bank. that's because the expected twist came with a twist. traders like alan valdes say the problem was that ben bernanke and company were particularly negative in their latest assessment of the u.s. economy. the statement that came along with the decision read, "there are significant downside risks to the economic outlook, including strains in global financial markets." >> "significantly" wasn't in the last three meetings. he put that in this time, and that, i think, had a little trepidation to traders' minds when they saw that. we knew the economy was weak, but now it's getting significantly weaker going forward. that was a key word. >> reporter: some experts also noted that investors were upset about the division among fed members. and, traders also said the extra bit of stimulus from the fed, in the form of reinvesting mortgage debt, barely moved the needle for stock investors. >> i wouldn't say that it's a real

. >> susie: tom, right from the open of trading here at the new york stock exchange, stocks plunged. blue chips were down as much as 300 points, but by the closing bell the dow pared its losses, off only 100 points. the nasdaq fell 6.5 and the s&p dropped nearly nine. and investors ran for cover to the bond market, buying up 10- year treasuries bills. the yield dropped to 1.9%, the lowest its been since the 1940s. >> tom: investors seem willing to accept no return on their money because they're worried about a recession. but, as suzanne pratt reports, there are reasons the u.s. can still avoid one. >> reporter: from wall street to main street, talk of another recession is heating up. many economists now put the risk of a double dip in the coming months at about 50%. while that's bad news, it's still a 50% chance of not having one. so let's cheer ourselves up and consider why recessionland may not be our next stop. economist julia coronado says if we skipped a recession, it would be because consumers still go shopping even though sentiment data shows they're blue. >> sometimes consume

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange to give us a look at what all of this means.d put out that weak assessment on the economy yesterday. a lot of economists have been saying it is -- the economy's now slowing. what makes this so significant? >> it's important, suzanne, because when you think about it, these fed policymakers that come out and talk and come up with monetary policy, these are the nation's top economists. what they say, it is often treated like gospel. what's interesting here, what really got everybody's attention is that the fed is clearly getting more and more concerned about the economy. now it issues a statement after every policy meeting as it did yesterday. most of the time it is pretty much the same language. but this time there was a change in the wording. in yesterday's statement, the fed said there are significant downside risks to the economic outlook, including strains in global financial markets. and you compare that to what they put out back in august where they said the committee now expects a somewhat slower pace of recovery over the c
