down here in lower manhattan in the surrounding blocks around the new york stock exchange. we are on one intersection where there has been pretty much a standoff between police and protesters and there was a barricade up preventing them from going any closer to the new york stock exchange and on the last few minutes we have seen some arrests. people were carried out and how we have seen, also, more police showing up at this intersection where we are with handcuffs. the police got on the loud speaker just a short time ago telling protesters to get on the sidewalk. they have blocked the intersection in this block right near the stock exchange and it's pretty much protesters just kind of in this standoff with police. it's been, you know, a very charged atmosphere. certainly tense at times. but mostly peaceful. you might hear in between chanting there is fans behind me. you're hearing that music. but this is just the first of the number of events today that protesters plan to hold in new york city. >> so, mary, among the other events for lack of a better word that some of these

new york city. hundreds of protesters chanting and carrying signs that are marching through the city and reportedly even trying to break into the new york stock exchange. nbc bay area's michele franzen is live in new york city. today marks the two-month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. tell us the latest out there. >> reporter: well, it does, jon. the protesters here certainly wanted to mark that anniversary, but even more so, they want waed to demonstrate today because a few days ago, the nypd moved into this park and cleared the space of the tents and the sleeping bags. no longer can they call this a sleeping camp. they're still assembling here and have been throughout the day. but much of these peaceful protests and demonstrations have also included some violent clashes with police. in the past few hours right here in the park, those tensions have been escalating with riot police moving in. you've had barricades lifted up by protesters and that is when the officers have been moving in, and at times, making arrests. more than 100 arrest soez far taking place at this park as well as an earlier march this morning. and that was when the

alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. there for a reason because they thought there was a chance. maybe this committee's not going to be able to come to an agreement. >> they have one week to go, but you never know. as far as knowing what cuts would happen, at this point, we know in a broad sense because it wipds up being up to the appropriation committees to decide what gets cut and by how much. but here's whakt happen. we could see cuts to defense spending by 16%. that's the military. we could also see nondefense discretionary spending slashed by 15%. and this is really the big question mark, t.j., because non defense des creche nar is like this big bucket. highways, national parks. federal courts. medicare cuts could be capped at 2% and you can see sort of a hands off approach to social security and medicaid. those would not be touched in these automatic cuts. >> well, how are they watching things on wall street? we've got a week to go and people have been looging for certainty, trying to see what's going to happen. ho

alison kosik at the new york stock exchange.g volume is light, but before we talk about that, the deal. is it going to fall through? >> yes. and that is really the question then, hala, the signal is really not so strong on this one going through. in fact, at&t is setting aside money just in case. it is setting aside a $4 billion breakup fee because companies have to pay a penalty if the deal they agree on winds up falling through. at&t is preparing this because of what happened on monday. that's when the fcc recommended that the deal go to an administrative hearing and this is very rare. the last time it happened was back in 2002 for a different deal and that deal eventually fell through. now, this one, the at&t/tmobile deal comes with a lot of controversy. in fact, the government filed a suit to block it back in february saying it is going to lead to higher prices for consumers and fewer jobs. but this is getting pretty expensive for at&t. in addition to that break-up fee, it will have to pay, if this thing falls through, a $3

i'm alison kosik at the new york stock exchange.ast week the bipartisan super committee failed to agree on a deficit cutting plan prior to the wednesday deadline. now senators say the first order of business this week will be a new bush to reduce the nation's debt by more than a trillion dollars in order to keep the number of automatic spending cuts to go into effect. only 80,000 new jobs were added in october, well below the average for this year. we'll see if the unemployment rate falls below 9% for only the third time this year. also on the economical lender, a report on new home sales and a closely watched index of home prices across the country are due. we'll get readings on construction spending and activity in the service sector. the fed's beige book is also coming out. it gives us a look at regional economic conditions throughout the u.s., and finally we'll get a look at the consumer confidence index in time for cyber monday, the biggest online shopping day for the year. a record $1.2 billion is expected to be spent that day
