traders at the new york stock exchange, new york stock exchange. you and i have been doing this for several years, you worry about volume on days like today, you don't want to get to ahead of yourself, but it seems like this rally really does have legs and strong conviction rally, what do you say? >> i don't know about the conviction, up 10,000 points since march of 2009. i don't know where the conviction begins and ends, but the rise of least resistance continues to be up. the last three and a half, four years, volume has been missing which tells us there were not a lot of believers back in the spring of '09 and not a lot of believees. for those folks on the sidelin sidelines, a lot of on the sidelines, it becomes very problematical because they do not row to the sky, how high is up? >> you make the point a lot of cash on the sidelines, but equity inflows, the cash with their market chasing the stock. let me go to charlie at the cme. we should talk about the numbers behind today's rally. initial jobless claims, but it is a holiday week, holiday se

traders standing by at the new york stock exchange, the cme group and the nymex. teddy weisberg standing by on the floor of the new york stock exchange. teddy, what we seem to be seeing is a change in language for many of the analysts, investors saying basically the taper is a good thing. are you in that camp that the taper, we're ready for it, a good thing? >> you mean bad is good and good is bad. well, you know, perhaps it's a good thing because we've been talking about it for almost 18 months, and, you know, l until it happens, quite frankly, i won't believe the timing of it. but i think at this point perhaps it's just been factored into the market. you know, it's kind of like kicking a dead horse. and i'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. i would simply say that the prospect of tapering or higher interest rates because the u.s. economy is doing better not for some mechanical reason or political reason would be a good thing. i mean, short term it might hurt the market, but long term it's good for companies and, therefore, good for stocks. >> a lot of talk

mark newton from the new york stock exchange. report was good especially before government data on the end of the week. are we selling on taper may happen sooner than later? what is your take, mark? >> interest rates have begun to spike violently higher last couple days. lori: that's what we said. >> 30-year is pressing near 4%. look at two and 10 spread that has broken out to new highs. some of that is fed related. i would mention yellen in her testimony and speech back on march the 4th not to put too much emphasis on adp revisions. they send to be exaggerated, susceptible to big swings. that is not as important but that obviously heightens expectations for friday's non-farm payrolls that that could come in higher that would be obviously a bullish economic point to lead people think we could taper. for now, equities are down four out of last five days, began late in november on the 29th. the selling isn't necessarily new today. we're starting to see acceleration in the last couple hours. lori: late in the fourth quarter, with a

let's get to the floor show, traders at the new york stock exchange, the cme group and the nymex. first to ben willis at the new york stock exchange. i always hate to bring in this up, we have got, ben, the dow's up 25% for the year. it makes sense to be concerned about a little bit of a pullback in 2014. you worried? >> cheryl, i'm glad you brought back -- brought up a pullback because, quite frankly, i've been looking for one for go, three months -- two, three months. we had a great run on the dow and the s&p, up over 25%, and virtually no corrections. the best correction we had in the s&p was about a 4.5% correction a few months ago. a real correction's about 10%. i can tell you right now most of the indicators we look at are not telling us we're looking at a correction anytime soon in january, but we're seeing heavy call buying activity and the vixx in the february and march call she questions which tells us professional traders are looking for something to happen in this market later on in the first quarter of the year, if you will. the money flows will drive this market highe

nicole petallides at the new york stock exchange taking a look at those stocks. >> reporter: oh, stormy weather, and we know that thousands of flights have been delayed and canceled and the like and how about all the shipping that goes with it, especially for this hot holiday season or we'll see if it's hot. obviously, everybody's waiting for packages and the like. let's take a look at both fedex and ups and also watching ebay closely now. all three of these stocks not too far off the up changed line fedex up about one-third of 1%, ups pulling back a little bit, but we did have fedex say on saturday that winter weather -- and this is their quote -- causing substantial flight and sort disruptions at multiple hubs. ebay warning that weather could delay shipments, and pay attention to arkansas, mississippi, tennessee, ohio and texas. and ups also saying that pickups and deliveries were not available in some of those areas. so, obviously, the winter weather may be getting in the way of some package deliveries, at least the speediest ones. dagen: thank you so much, nicole. that winter -- exc

head back to nicole petallides on floor of the new york stock exchange. they take a big hit? ou see that hat? it is freezing here in new york. when i talk about the weather really brings me to these homebuilders, that's right. the homebuilders took a hit. industrials did as well. homebuilders have a particular trade called the hope trade. people start to invest from homebuilders now until the spring selling season. that is the big season. toll brothers came out with their numbers recently and said business has been flat versus last year. the earnings they delivered yesterday were a little bit of a disappointment. the hope is that the homebuilders will do well. ceo of toll brothers says the demand is on our side. demographics are on our side. we're cautiously optimistic. that gives you a little sense of a little nervousness there. the group overall down 2% for a lot of those names. overall for this year a little back and forth. if you were up a couple percent. down a couple percent. certainly not like other groups outperforming this industry overall. david: getting a little roc

news, though, u.s. manufacturing activity hitting its hhghest level this more than two years, and new stocks are getting an energy boost. let's get to nicole petallides on the floor of the new york stock exchange for more on this. >> reporter: it's really interesting when you start to see the manufacturing activity on the move that way and the best in two years. it really helps things along. i'm going to show you marathon petroleum, up 5.5% right now. also deutsche bank raised their rating to a buy from a hold. but with the ism numbers that rose 57.3% from 56.4%, highest since april twch, -- 2007, it moved a lot of the names up with it. we saw treasuries, a lot of people started to sell off bonds, started to think maybe the fed would begin tapering of some sort, we saw the yield going to 2.8% and energy names on the news, and it took the major averages up off their lows as well. liz: do you get the 11:45 a.m. guilt group tickler every day? right? you get that e-mail, and it's like shop now or at least in 15 minutes? >> reporter: uh-huh. right. liz: well, guilt group is just one of many sites that is getting the business of more than 130 million americans who are expected to shop online on this

nicole petallides on the floor of the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: is a light volume day. right now about 350 million shares changing hands which is pretty pathetic. that is tough to digest. when you talk about : how it glittered, the people who bought gold up pretty disappointed. we ant to drop from almost 30%. there is glbb and exchange traded fund which accounts for about 40%, basically 40 percent of total etf holdings, and hhre are some of the names that we follow. the group is slightly makes. but how about the year to date numbers on these particular names, minor related chemicals related. down over 50 percent this week. gold corp down 43%. randall's down 38% with, on the same year, the markets have taken off. the dow, s&p, nasdaq of between 25 and 37%. when you have a stock that goes down 50% on one-year with the averages were gaining almost 30 percent, that is a tough go of it. liz: year to date just the total opposite of what it has done oo the past couple of years. so we always try and get our viewers to look at things in a different light. those of you who wanted

let's get to the bottom of it with our floor show, traders at the new york stock exchange, the cme grouphe nymex. so jonathan corpina at the new york stock exchange, to you first. what are you seeing, there's some momentum building, correct? >> we had some economic data that rattled our market a little bit, normally not earth-shaking news, but it seems like in this market has been fragile lately, and investors have been looking for opportunities to take profits off the table. that's what we saw this morning. i think overall when you're going to look at the month and the end of this quarter as a whole, this market will continue to see the growth that we have seen over time. we talk about the santa claus rally, we're getting fewer and fewer days left to trade, we're going to start seeing some hedge funds that have been trailing the market so far have to up their performance, so more money will be coming in in the next few weeks. we're going to have a couple of short trading sessions that will affect things, but other than that, i don't think we're going to get too panic in i finish panicky

adam: back to the floor of the new york stock exchange and keith bliss of cat tone and company. there for us right now. keith, we're finishing aer terrific year for investors. how do we keep this going into the new year? >> this is great question. if i knew you and i wouldn't be talking to each other because i would be investing my own money wisely. i think momentum carries forward into the new year, at least two tore lee weeks into january. one of our quant models kicked into momentum indicator last night which is perfectly appropriate for the year we've had. new money comes in. january effect will take hold off the santa clause rally. there is no need why the s&p can't really two or 3%. we don't see the s&p 500 overbought until it gets up to 1880. there is quite a lot of room to run. we'll see that in january. adam: especially with the session we saw earlier in the hour, does it trouble the large size of stock buybacks and number of companies doing that this year? >> that is the one risk we could see in the new year and not necessarily that they're doing a lot of stock buybacks
