tavis: paul tough is a contributor for the new york times magazine, published a book on education this year, how children succeed, the hidden power of character. good have you back and congratulations on your success. can i pick apart the title? how children succeed, i get it. the hidden power of character, it seems to me that the way the kids learn is to be encouraged to try and to fail. try again, fail again, fail better. it is a wonderful quote from beckett but parents don't want their kids to fail. they are trying to get into competitive schools, but how do learned when nobody encourages you to try and fail? >> i think it means that we need to change things in lots of different venues. we also need to start that change at home. the message to parents is that if you don't give them the opportunity to fail, to fail productively and creatively, they're going to get out there in the world and they will hit some kind of setback. that is the problems of many kids are having, if they have not had that opportunity and if they have been protected from failure, they really get thrown off. >>

and, you know, i wrote a story for the new york times magazine when governor romney, specifically on his time as governor that appeared about three weeks ago. and, you know, the way the piece includes is by -- i interviewed a number of people, particularly the more conservative house republicans. there licking their chops. they believe that this will be a great moment for them if mitt romney wins. a moment for them the legislate very aggressively the conservative agenda. my question to several of them was, but what if that is not so? what if governor romney, president of electronic decides that that is not how he wishes to govern and will govern more in his motion when he was governor of massachusetts and the uniformly said there would be disappointed. and one of the stars of the two-party freshman class is featured in my bug said there will be an insurrection. really boisterous. you have seen nothing yet. president romney does not behave like the conservative, it is going to be the death of the republican party, but we're going to burn down. >> i'm going to let that sit there for a

i know you had 10 apiece for "the new york times" magazine in 1985. but here we are in 2012.t didn't take you that long. so tell us a little bit about why you decided to do at this point. >> guest: in 1985 i was assigned the story and met with rehnquist in interviews in 1984. i'd written him a letter. he had not given any interviews at all. we weren't sure whether he would accept this or not. he had he sent a letter back right away, which he was very punk ways about that. he said you know, why don't she'll commendable get to know each other better and i'll decide whether i want to cooperate or not. i thought i'm going to go on with my tape recorder and questions and be fully prepared and i'll let him throw me out if he doesn't want to have this conversation. in fact come he had the conversation we had to very commit very good meetings. time goes by. during my research for the times, my editor at the time was encouraging me. dig, dig for origins of his conservatism. what is that? there's got to be more here. this guy is wired from birth as an archconservative. dig hard for tha

time. new york magazine's frank rich joins us next. >>> if you take the polls at face value, there's reason to believe the election is going to be close. and there's reason to believe president obama is likely to be reelected. it's difficult to look at the current polling and include that mitt romney is going to win tomorrow. but it's possible he might win. that said, republicans insist they are going to win. they at least think they have a good shot at winning. and to the extent that's more than just bra va da. they will direct you to two things that give them cause to believe. one is the early voting numbers. democrats are winning in the early voting. why would that i can ma the republicans feel good about early voting? because democrats are not winning by as much as in 2008. in all of the swing states, the democrats won in 2008. and in all of them but colorado right now this year, the democrats have banked big margins in terms of who is turning up for early voting this year. look at the comparable numbers for 2008. in each of these swing states, the margins by which they are winning is s

[laughter] i couldn't resist. everyone always said never answer a review, it's crazy, it shows you've been hurt, you're sensitive. but i had three of them, and they were all old men. and old men who are successful in anything, they don't sit around writing reviews. but these guys did. john updike, who was so old in public print he'd complain of his bladder problems.
