she is joining us from new york via skype. fran, you see this kind of thing. wonder what does this mean about the transition where we are going to go from security from nato international forces to the afghan forces. is that possible? is that a good idea as the president announced last week when you see something like this? >> reporter: suzanne, you have to believe they are trying to take control. this is the second attack. remember, the goal of the u.s. forces and afghan forces is keeping the taliban out of kabul. that has been the last perimeter. the notion in recent weeks there have been two such attacks. one before the president's announcement and one after that required nato to come in and back up with air power afghan and coalition forces. this is a real strategic embarrassment. on top of which, only recently, did secretary gates and the president acknowledge that they have started preliminary discussions. >> fran townsend, thank you very much. president obama will discuss other issues during the news conference as well as kabul. that is scheduled to beg

and she joins us from new york v via skype. fran great to see you. orted the obama administration will soon unveil new counter terrorism strategy. they've announced to withdraw u.s. troops from afghanistan. what do we anticipate the strategy will be? >> the most interesting part we're two and a half years into the administration, president obama made it very clear that he's going to take a different approach. but the only insight to what the counter terrorist strategy has been, speeches by the president, speeches by john brennan, his homeland security adviser and actions they take. we've seen increased use of drones not only in the tribal area. but also in yemen, we've saw it on the bin laden camp. this is an opportunity for president obama to articulate what his vision and effort is going to be, going forward. frankly it's gone through an interagency process but will be very mindful of what the accomplishments have been and what the goals are going forward. >> and, fran, we've seen on videotape now, we're hearing recently, as well as other al qaeda l
