and newark. so we're in good shape in j.f.k., but our people are at work and sorting packages. >> susie: even though the planes are getting in, and the fedex messengers are getting out, there's a lot of that don't have power. how do you know whether you should be delivering a package or not? is this slowing you down? >> it is slowing us down. our team members are affected by the same transportation limit anticipations as everyone else in the region, and our fedex delivery stations are located in the neighborhood in which they deliver, so they have a good sense of what's available to deliver to. fedex also offers a service whereby you can actually ask for your package to be held at a fedex location for you to pick it up. so if you know you won't be home or your neighborhood is inaccessible. you can ask them to hold it. we're making the packages available for customers. >> susie: what impact does it have on volume, especially this time of year with people holiday shopping? >> obviously, when the ar

many people do know newark for being a port city. we are right into the bay there. so a lot of new jersey is on coast line. a lot of cities like mine and new york city, jersey city, were all right along water. we've seen traditionally, especially last year with irene, significant flooding. but what's different this year is this storm is, as i said before, epic. it will last in duration perhaps twice as long as irene and it will bring about a significantly more water into our city. so we're expecting roads being backed up, communities really being under large amounts of water, power outages that could last for days if not well more than a week. all of this means that we have to now fight the storm as it is but the after math will be a very difficult time of clean-up as well. >> suarez: what's the best advice you're getting about when the worst of the storm is going to hit newark? >> well, we know in about an hour or two, that's when the significant time, 6-hour period, which we are going to be at our peak of this state of emergency, by 8:00 tonight, that's when high

the good news, jfk and newark are going to reopen with limited service. but la guardia, as you heard handles 1,000 flights a day, looks like a lake. that's the airport here still underwater. that airport is not going to reopen. the travel impact of this storm, 15,000 flights canceled. not only around the country but overseas, as well. >> this isn't just a new york centric story. this has a global impact. you think of how much commerce comes in and out of new york globally. you can't get in and out of the city, then basically not happening. >> massive cleanup under way for sure. >>> customers in lower manhattan are waking up without electricity. it will be the weekend before the power is back. the utility company says it is the most expensive storm-related power outage in city history. streets are especially dangerous because so many traffic lights are not working, as juju just referenced. >>> and further north in midtown manhattan, that massive construction crane that was taken down by sandy's wind is secure. the street below has been closed off. a wide a

let's go now to newark mayor cory booker, who joins me on the phone. mr. mayor, how are you? >> i'm doing all right, obviously we're dealing with a lot of challenges statewide. those of us here in newark, new jersey especially, our hearts and prayers are with the people who face the biggest brunt of the devastation. >> it really is absolutely appalling. i was struck by what the governor said about the president. somebody tweeted to me just now, this ability to coordinate team work between governor christie and barack obama is exactly how our government should work all of the time. i couldn't agree more. it's been a massive breath of fresh air to see a republican leader like chris christie so prepared to be openly praiseworthy of a democrat president. what did you think? >> well, they are on the front lines of this crisis, the emergency workers reach out to residents, i've seen cooperation between port authority police, my fire department. nobody stops and asks you what your religion is, nobody stops and asks you what your political party affiliation is. folks are just rolling

newark, kennedy and la guardia did close during the hurricane. newark and kennedy have reopened for some flights but la guardia remains closed with water on the runways. >> new york based airports are the ones with the limiting point. the third of all air traffic goes through those new york airports, newer, la guardia and jfk. getting the bent -- up and running in our priority. >> it is a domino effect. if the planes can't get to a major airport and major hubs like the ones in new york, the entire system gets set down work affected. they are trying to get the water off of the runways at la guardia and trying to pump it out but then after that, the faa has to come in and inspect everything, inspect the equipment and the runways and do safety checks to make sure everything is ok for air traffic to concern out of la guardia and that could take some time. connell: some pictures from la guardia. good to see any flights getting out of kennedy airport because in terms of the geography, kennedy is not far from the rockaway beach and further away breezey

kennedy, laguardia, newark, they are closed.ight and until they can sort out the safety implications of that, those airports won't open any time soon. atlantic city is also closed because of the flooding. the airport tends to stay open, technically. the faa doesn't close them unless there's a safety reason, which is what's happened in the new york airports. that does not mean airlines are flying. so washington-dulles, washington national, look for mass cancellations and serious delays, even though flights going into boston logan will have some serious problems. there are just a handful moving. philadelphia and pittsburgh, they start to move. if you are meant to be flying to the northeast today, take advantage of what the airlines are doing. they're allowing rebookings wednesday through thursday travel with a no fee change and a full refund. but it's got to be by november 7th. soledad, this is the picture. this is what you have to bear in mind. as long as these major airports in the northeast remain either closed or seriously del
