and we are also at newark airport. martin, let me begin with you. state hack upgras been upgraded critical. >> reporter: it's a mixture of bad news coming out for that particular patient. good news for the overall containment of ebola so let's take it one at a time. the condition worsening it's gone from serious to critical. we do not know anything beyond that. we don't know what sort of additional treatment is being applied here or what may have led to his condition growing worse, we just know that it has. meanwhile, the other effort is, of course, trying to identify anyone who may have come in contact with thomas duncan. initially it was at 114. they've systematically been sitting down and talking to everybody. this is a massive effort. but it shows you the kind of footwork that's involved. the cdc has two groups that are going through all of this contact tracing they call it. it is critical to try to control the disease by actually making contact with anyone. they have whittled the list down from 114 to 50 of which you've just pointed out 10 of t

let's talk about the plane scare today in newark involving some passengers. we know that some passengers on the plane were from liberia some, of course, were from elsewhere because this is a plane a lot of people made connections to in brussels and then came here to newark, new jersey. here is some sound just in to cnn from some of the passengers on that flight. listen. >> well, they didn't give us very much information. it was quite scary but it would have been nice to get better information. we were just told nothing. the woman is being tested for ebola at university hospital in newark after developing a fever. miguel marquez joins us now live from new york. you're covering this development. miguel, what do we know about the status of this woman and how she was detected? >> well, it's a bit of a complicated long story, actually. she came into the country while she was flying in the state of new jersey and new york changeds the rules for health care workers like her who had been treating individuals in ebola zones in west africa. she's been back from sierra leone. about 1,300 people have died there. when she got to newark, she was held under quarantine under this new extraordinary measure that new jersey and new york are doing that exceeds the cdc standards for quarantine at the moment. and she became very flustered at the airport and she apparently registered a fever. the question, though, is when did she register that fever. the new jersey state department of health saying she checked in at the airport, she was fine, she developed that fever later. the newark department of health saying tha

nurse casey hickox remains in isolation on the ground of university hospital in newark. she tested negative for ebola, but since she treated patients in west africa, a state order keep her quarantined here for 21 days. >> what did she tell you about her experience? >> reporter: we spoke with casey's mother on the phone from the family home near dallas, karen hickox didn't want her voice recorded but told me casey feels her rights have been violat violated. she has no temperature, no symptoms. she doesn't know what's going to happen. that's the most frustrating part. she doesn't know what the next step is. it might be a lawsuit. hickox hired a civil rights attorney and could take the forced isolation to court. on the streets of new york -- >> panic -- >> reporter: growing skepticism of the mandatory quarantines and new jersey governor chris christie is also getting pushback from infectious disease experts who say isolation is not necessary for people showing no symptoms. >> do you no longer trust the cdc and doctor and scientists? >> reporter: chris christie firing back o

also under mandatory quarantine is the nurse in newark, new jersey, who returned to the u.s. this week after taking care of ebola patients in west africa. this morning she is criticizing the way she says she's being treated. as we told you yesterday morning, preliminary tests for ebola came back negative for nurse kaci hickox. the isolation policy is part of a new mandate by the governors of new jersey and new york. they're requiring a mandatory quarantine for anybody arriving at newark or jfk airports who has had direct contact with anyone infected with the deadly virus. yesterday in "the dallas morning news," she called the measure "a frenzy of disorganization and fear that made her feel like a criminal." some passengers at newark's airport say they understand the nurse's frustration. >> i think that's a long time, but if that's what they need to do, it's a necessary, yeah, okay, we have to do that, we have to make sure that it doesn't spread around here. >> new jersey governor chris christie says he sympathizes with her, but has to do what he can to ensure public health sa
