canldzles and a small makeshift memorial sit outside the newark apartment building. police say jones and a 28-year- old man identified as jarrell marshall was shot inside jones's apartment while the children were home. the children, just 1, 3, and 4 years old were not harmed. >> as horrible as it is, it's very overwhelming. >> reporter: jones' neighbors were stunned to hear about the saturday night shooting. the motive, still unknown. some neighbors heard the fighting last night. >> screaming, gunshots. >> reporter: a neighbor who jones was having problems with an ex-boyfriend. she says the former couple had a frightening argument just last week. >> i was black and blue. >> what did she say when she came to you then? >> she was just shaking. she was saying she got a restraining order. >> reporter: jones' neighbors say she feared for her safety and worried nothing could be done to protect her. >> the way she was shaking, she was scared. >> reporter: so far, there have been no arrestsk and police have not released any information on a possible suspect. jones' children

ross is in newark this evening. a.j. >> reporter: sandra, just hours ago the newark public schools announced they will be closed tomorrow due to the weekend storm. if you look behind me, you can clearly see why. we're along jefferson street, not too far away from downtown newark. this is one of the better streets, believe it or not. as we passed by, some were simply impassable for our four- wheel-drive truck to come down. just a couple of hours ago the mayor discussed the ongoing clean-up efforts that still have a ways to go. newark was hard hit by saturday's storm with more than two feet of snow. despite a travel ban in place, officials say a lot of people didn't heed those warnings, which resulted in dozens of cars getting stuck in the newark police say they received nearly 280 weather-related calls from cars stuck in the snow and downed power lines. people ignoring the travel ban also had ripple effects with several dozen police, fire and ems vehicles getting stuck in the snow, trying to help those on the road ou

mallory hoff is live in newark. mallory? >> reporter: ken, good morning. students will need to watch out for those slippery spots. we did take a good drive around newark and tell you things have dramatically improved. most streets are cleared since yesterday. sidewalks like this one have been cleared. the problem, though, the streets like this where if you can see to the side here, half this street blocked with snow. you can imagine that could create problems as students go back to school today. i want you to take a look at the video. this shows crews hard at work picking up the snow, moving it somewhere else. because of the conditions on the roadway, new jersey d.o.t. had to help out. 200 crews out on the roads trying to improve them. the mayor said the work would get done. >> we are going to do this done. i know tensions are high. we will not leave anybody stranded or left behind. we will work until it's done. >> reporter: perhaps this mural days ahead. it does feel better today but one thing we need to bring to your attention, a lot of these side street

schools in newark are closed for a second straight day. new jersey reporter toni yates is live with the latest. toni? >> the city of newark is saying that department of transportation crews that came to town to help them dig out, they are mainly focusing on streets that are around schools so that he can this -- so that they can get children back to school. that means streets like polk street here, you see children playing on the snow mound, streets like this may have to wait a little longer. literally only one half of this stretch of block of polk street is clear. the other half is covered in snow. people on the streets say that is because there are workers that live on polk street, construction crews and they had coworkers came and helped them dig the trucks out. that left the huge mound in the middle of the street but it didn't matter because the other half of the street has not been plowed at all in any way according to some homeowners. >> look. today. you go this way. >> but even the whole street is messed up. >> yeah, yeah, a mess. a
