the tornado came out of newcastle right through here, and it was right there at this time. let me show you the structure of the storm, though, as we take a look three dimensionally. this was picking up debris, this was picking up shingles and trees and everything else on the ground, throwing it into the sky. thousands of feet in the sky. if we can rotate this around, it's an amazing picture if you consider what's going on here. we have winds at this point 210 miles per hour. anderson, this storm went from zero, went from nothing, all the way to 166 to an ef-4 in just ten minutes. now this almost -- kind of looks like a coral reef but in fact, this is not rain or hail coming down. this is the debris in the sky getting thrown as high as 20,000 feet up and obviously then raining back down on the people of moore and of newcastle. i am so thankful at this point in time that our numbers, our fatality number went down to 24, because last night when it seemed like it was climbing, when we were talking to the people there, the investigators, it's like wow, where could this go, becau

way, this is being called the newcastle-moore tornado, but when it dropped down, it was just a finger of a tornado, barely a funnel cloud. within an hour, it was a monster storm developing just about as quickly as all the details have told us the joplin storm developed. this storm has been covered with storm chasers and local television from start to finish. rubble.'re looking a the the unbelievable debris field. you heard ginger in the field walking around there and we heard reports that some of the foundations were completely cleared. that puts it definitely in that ef-4 and maybe even higher category, the storm that's capable of taking a foundation and clearing it of debris, as the storm leaves the area. so it looks like it's been swept already by a big tractor. but it hasn't been yet. it was just the storm that did that damage. and in other areas, buildings just shattered. then you look at major construction. you see major cement construction also being damaged. this is very unusual and the signature of a very large and very powerful tornado. folks have been digging through the de

so, tornado warned storm in and around this area of newcastle, a.m., we had a well defined echo on don already radar. see the flash? that would appear to be a power line. so this tornado right now is touching the ground, neil. you need to be moving from your tv screen and take shelter. these are violent, damaging, very destructive storms that could be on the ground for minutes, even up to an hour, and carve paths miles long. >> neil: it did touch ground and it first hit about four minutes ago, and it sort of rehit and tearing up lines along the way, homes, galled nose what else. but these tend to come very fast, and very recklessly with some abandon. you see images of homes that are affected on one side of the street, not on the other side of the street. this looks fairly large. residents were braced for this. there were warnings, oklahoma's governor will be joining me shortly on the phone to outline how she moved to try to get ahead of this thing and warn residents almost throughout the state to be prepared. this is 40 miles east of oklahoma city. which of course was buffetted by the

bretton lee joins us from newcastle, oklahoma. just to let people know, newcastle, we haven't mentioned it much in the broadcast. right next to moore. it also saw a lot of the damage. how close were you and what was it like to see this thing come by? >> we were initially 200 to 300 yards east of the tornado. it was pretty intense in that area. we saw the rotation. the national weather service was spot-on as far as getting out a warning about 16 minutes ahead of the actual tornado being on the ground. in that location, i mean, it's a normal sound that you hear from everybody explaining it. i mean, it's surreal. but the sound of a freight train rolling on. you know, when it came down, it was just a small ef-1. but as i've said earlier, it was one of the tornadoes that i never seen intensify this quickly. you know, it went from an ef-1 to an ef-3 or 4 in a matter of about 15 minutes. >> now, i'm going to jump in with a question about that. >> go ahead. >> because what you're talking about is the wind speed picking up dramatically in

the tornado was on the ground, it set down on the ground near newcastle.t was the same area on may 3rd, 1999, the other f-5 that become the benchmark in oklahoma city, it took a very similar path, starting in newcastle but across moore and the areas that got hit in '99 were also hit in this event. the main thing that made this one so terrible is a lot of the schools, which i'm near an elementary school on the west side of moore which has had a number of injuries and some fatalities at this location, what i'm being told by people working the scene, that a lot of schools, shopping centers were full. we have a shopping center on the west side that collapsed. we have malls that collapsed with people trapped. you name it, we've got the problem here. it is massive, it's long, it's about a mile wide roughly. i've had reports of two miles, i can only confirm about three quarters to a mile wide at my location, west i-35. but the damage here is massive. it's very similar to the may 3rd f-5 tornado. in some places it's worse. in some places, not as worse but very sim

. >> newcastle, oklahoma was first in line. charles cook shot this remarkable video and watched the storm unfold. >> at first i thought it was a smaller tornado until it got close and i realized it was huge. >> it was blackened and sucked up all kinds of debris from trucks to tree bark to tires. it barrelled, taking aim at moore. >> tornado emergency from moore. >> this corner of the country is the heart of what's called tornado alley. the fastest winds on earth, more than 300 miles per hour were recorded here in another giant twister 14 years ago. veteran meteorologist quickly realized this tornado was going to be one for the history books. radar imagery showed a large and intense storm winding itself up. >> all neighborhoods from west moore high school down to the river belowground out of the way, a safe room, storm cellar. no other option will save your life. >> as the giant twister came towards moore, residents had minutes to prepare. the warnings went out and people braced if are the worst. >> here it am cans. here it come

sliced through the towns of newcastle and moore, oklahoma. in an instant, neighborhoods were destroyed. dozens of people lost their lives. many more were injured. and among the victims were young children, trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew, their school. so our prayers are with the people of oklahoma today. our gratitude is with the teachers who gave their all to shield the children, with the neighbors, first responders, and emergency personnel who raced to help as soon as the tornado passed. and with all of those who, as darkness fell, searched for survivors through the night. as a nation, our full focus right now is on the urgent work of rescue. and the hard work of recovery and rebuilding that lies ahead. yesterday, i spoke with governor fallen to make it clear to oklahomans that they would have all of the resources that they need at their disposal. last night, i issued a disaster declaration to expedite those resources, to support the governor's team in the immediate response, and to offer direct assistance to folks who
