a man in his mid- twenties was shot several times in the stomach at third street and newcomb avenue. police say someone saw a white vehicle leaving the area. the man suspected of raping an oakland woman, who videotaped him on her cell phone, has been caught. oakland police found 47 year old dion mcdaniel hiding in a doghouse tuesday, near the apartment where the woman was assaulted last week. officials said mcdaniel's been on the run since t-v stations started airing the video. police describe him as a career criminal and parole violator. there's now a stronger sense of urgency in san jose, at monthly meetings on reducing gang violence. the mayor's "gang prevention task force" had its latest gathering at city hall last night. the city's murder rate is up sharply this year... as more than a hundred police officers are about be laid off,because of budget cuts. about half of the city's 27 homicides this year have been linked to gang activity.
