antwan james on trial for allegedly killing his stepfather joseph newell after prosecutors say newell asked him and his brothers to do yardwork. james' mother bernadette newell told the jury her son was depressed and in a downward spiral after he resigned from the d.c. fire department. when questioned by the defense attorney, bernadette said, quote, antwan was very emotional about leaving the fire department. i asked him to talk to a pastor or therapist. the defense attorney asked, quote, did you ever take him to a doctor or something like that? bernadette replied, no. i failed him. on april 22nd, newell says afterance wan refused to help his stepfather with yardwork, she got angry and said, quote, if he didn't do the work he had to leave. that's when bernadette told the jury her son snapped saying, quote, he jumped up and said, you're doing it because of him and said watch this and he was out the door. moments later, shots were fired. in court, prosecutors played a 911 call where bernadette was heard frantically telling the operator, my son shot my husband. i can't believe my husband
