that's where rewill find our gary tuchman in newport. you and i spoke yesterday and you talked about there were some who were actually considering riding out the storm in their boats. you're feeling the effects now. have they second-guessed that by now? >> reporter: the battle is not over here at new por, rhode island. it's great a lot of people did decide to ride out this storm on their boat bus this is the newport, rhode island, marina. but as you can see there are beautiful pleasure craft and fishing boats. people slept on them overnight. overnight it wasn't bad. but the rain has stopped. we had heavy rain for several hours that ended about an hour and a half ago and it seems like the worst is over, yet the winds have picked up. in this state of rhode island, the smallest state in the country, 150,000 customers without power, including most of the people here in newport. the power is out here. we have lots of people coming out, asking us, is the worst over? can we go outside? we can tell them, despite the fact there is a mandatory eva

let's go to adam housley is he in newport, rhode island with the latest. good morning, adam. >> good morning. still people in the northeast without power and winds gusting in some cases knocking down trees. if you drive around the area here before the sun went down last night, you will see trees down everywhere. significant damage that's caused a lot of people to have no power and no way to get back home. along the water front we saw some damage to the sea walls. maybe the rain didn't come to some parts of the new england area as it did as bad in other places at least here in the riled area and western part of massachusetts it was all about the high wind and tide. we were out yesterday as parts of the storm moved through and here is what we found. >> hurricane irene has been downgraded. it's battling the coast of newport, rhode island. it's extremely rough out there right now. there is not much rain. it's mostly high surf and wind coming ashore. most people didn't listen. you can see this house here all boarded up. people left. as you go around inside to n

this is the evacuation area in newport.not one to cast judgments about evacuations, but this is a very different case. it's such a huge area, and to evacuate here, you've got to drive hours away to get out of the potentially dangerous area. so there are, frankly, a lot of people who are staying here in the newport, rhode island, areas, one of the great cities of america. >> and you've got a lot of historic homes there, gary. what are the concerns there? some go back hundreds of years. >> reporter: martin, not only historic homes, some of the biggest homes in america. huge, gigantic, beautiful mansions that are vulnerable. this city was founded in the 17th century, so you have homes that are 150, 200 years old. you have old churches. you have churches that were almost destroyed the during the great hurricane of 1938, that more than 600 people were killed in southern new england and on long island. so there's a great history here. a lot of boarding up, but also a lot of people, not only residents, but tourists. 25,000 people

gary tuckman in newport rhode island and soledad o'brien is in new york city. the evacuation orders for parts of new york was actually lifted minutes ago, hundreds of thousands of people left for higher ground ahead of irene but today the storm pushed the rivers on either side of manhattan over their banks and into the streets but good news now, a lot of water receded but just a little bit of wind they are still experiencing. >> just a little backdrop from soledad o'brien. it looks like a few people have left now. >> they are all on this side. you know, the wind has really picked up. it's funny, when you cutaway from me, the wind blows hard. when you come back it slows down. but the evacuation order lifted and we can expect to see people coming back from the high rises, evacuation zone a they called it chgs a mandatory evacuation, this is landfill and the concern was that if people didn't get out and the storm was as bad as they thought it would be and if lots of water rushed in there would be major problems in the high rises, they got people out here. now peop

the boy died when a tree crashed into an apartment building outside newport news. in north carolina the storm damaged many of the piers and tourists evacuated the outer banks. irene has been downgraded to a category 1. it will likely still cause severe flooding and spur more tornadoes in the area. more than 2 million people were evacuated on the east coast and almost a million people are without power right now. in new york, shutdown the subway system at noon. and flights have been cancelled. we have more on bay area airports. for that, let's bring in monte francis who's at sfo with a look at flight delays and cancellations there. >> reporter: a total of 40 departing flights were cancelled here at sfo. 30 more have been cancelled for tomorrow. dozens of other flights have been delayed. just inside of the united counter here at sfo, there's a long line of people. some who have been waited for three, four, even five hours trying to book new flights. there's also a domino effect. flights from houston, hawaii, and oregon are delayed because they depend on aircraft. we
