this was the first real mansion on bellview avenue in newport, rhode island. and it was built by richard morris hunt the architect, the same architect who built the breakers several years later. he was the most prestigious, well-recognized, well-respected architect really in the world. he had studied at the ecol ecole de bosart in paris, the first american to do so, and he was much sought after. this house was built really by alva vanderbilt with richard morris hunt. it was a 39th birthday present from her husband william to her, and alva was a great francophile. she lived in paris right during the civil war. she came from mobile, alabama. and living in paris she became quite the frank francophile and quite informed about french art and architect yue. so she had a very strong hand in what this building was going to look like and how it was is going to be decorated and it's very much in the french style, designed to look like a facsimile of the petit trianon. and we'll see in a minute that many of these remembrances of her paris experiences come into play as al

on 16th street down in newport news. and they wanted me to give a talk on citizenship. so there i was, a young white male police officer, going into a predominantly african-american populated school. made up mainly of kindergarten through second grade students. as i walked in, i learned this was their graduation. and i was told very quickly that this was a first step in head start program. and not being very familiar with educational policy at the time, i had to inquire exactly what that meant. and i was told very quickly that a number of these children had not earlier in their education shown promise to be able to achieve those early childhood educational goals. well, being a person who questions just about everything in life i wondered how that could be. then i was told that many of these children did not have the opportunity to have early childhood education. i began as a young police officer to really understand the terms of injustice. and it stung me hard that day. but i did something that most people should not do. i asked at that particular gathering if any of th

newport, you just mentioned always looking for new polling methods. my question is, with new polling methods especially the internet, how drastically do you think that could damage the credibility for a polling company like gallup, because of people maybe taking the poll two, three, four times or saying to their friends, hey, you should get on and take this poll, and just having a widespread data? >> well, that's up to us, as an industry. you know, what our goal is at gallup and in the industry, as i mentioned, is to say here is a sample which we purport accurately represents what we would have gotten, had we interviewed everybody in the country or here is a sample result that we think predicts a certain outcome. that's up to us in the industry and at gallup to maintain the standards that allow us to say that. in some instance, if ten years from now we're using the international polls and people are bombarding with as happens often with a lot of like people trying to jam the numbers one way or the other, that would be up to us to know that was going o

tonight a visit to the mariners museum in newport news, virginia. a civil war navy conference in march to mark the 150th anniversary. we'll first hear from a naval history professor on the war along the atlantic coast. this is about 50 minutes. >>> well, it's my great pleasure to introduce our opening session here for the battle of hampton roads weekend 150th edition. craig simonds is professor emeritus at the united states naval academy where he taught history and civil war history for 30 years. he thought he was retired. then he went back, and he's teaching there again. he's a native of anaheim, california. craig earned his b.a. degree at ucla and his master's from the university of florida where he studied under the late john k. mann. in the 1970s, he was in the navy, a navy officer and the first ensign ever to lecture at the college in newport, rhode island. he remained at college az civilian professor from 1974 to 1975. he's the author of at least 12 books -- maybe more by now. who is counting, right? he has written over 1 00 scholarly articles
