i am in toms river, new jersey, on the hard-hit new jersey coastline. we're going to take you now to manhattan, still struggling to recover. sinlt ya mcfadden is at one of new york city's major hospitals where evacuations of the sick are currently under way. cynthia? >> good evening, terry. that's right. well, new york began to wobble back to her feet today. the new york stock exchange opened and some buses are running, but i am standing in front of the third major hospital to shut down since the storm. this is the legendary bellevue. yesterday, when they began the evacuation, there were 725 patients inside. tonight, there are still about 200 patients inside, along with 200 members of the national guard, who are helping carry them down, sometimes as many as 18 stories. you know, we began the day here but we spent much of it in yet another community where the devastation is still to be fully unpacked. a community just outside of new york, the rockaways. this morning, the word went out. backup generators operating since monday night had failed. national g

>>jonathan: the good news is the port of new york and new jersey is re-opened so more gas supplies can come in. once the power goes back on we are told that here in manhattan, at least, that should be this weekend and more gas stations will be able to open and the lines should get a little better, at least here in the city there is, perhaps, a light at the end of the tunnel but new jersey is in a very bad situation. we have seen the longest lanes of all and no word on when they will get power back. obviously, getting power back so you can pump gas is critical. >>shepard: the gridlock is ridiculous. >>jonathan: the gridlock coming in at rush hour today was pretty bad for everyone although i have to say from my evidence when we got through rush hour most of the streets seemed quieter than a normal weekday if you are not by a gas station but it is for tough for those using mass transportation it because obviously with so many subways down, with so many commuter trains down everyone is trying to get on the buses. in were very, very long lines to get on the buses to come in to manhattan fro

this was new york. look, the electric wires strung overhead where the elements could knock them down. hundreds of people died in that storm. an enormous number of buildings burned because fire departments couldn't reach them. when the snow finally melted the runoff was so great it created floods. great blizzard of 1888 was a huge disaster. new york city historian rick burns reminded us about it last night of how new york city responded to that long ago disaster. new york city then built the modern subway so the trains could keep running in the elements and built a new electrical system with the wires not over ground but underground. new york city had been fighting for years about whether to put the wires underground. but after the blizzard, the abstract political debate stopped and the innovation began. they had a problem that everybody could see. overhead requires, vulnerable to storms, and they fixed that problem. they put the wires under ground. the scale of the still unfolding disaster of this storm

the good news.lso because ocean city was just south of where the storm came ashore they fared slightly better than the rest of the coastal new jersey towns. they did have three feet of water on this island from the ocean all the way from the bay. you can see they are trying to pump some of that water still off the streets here. there are some streets that are still impassible here and some pretty significant damages to the north end of this island. we went up there we saw the front end loaders we've been seeing with the dump trucks scooping off the sand off the streets. we saw homeowners who had hired back hoes and little bobcats to clear sand from the front of their house and guys with shovels shoveling out sand from his garages. i talked to one of them who is trying to salvage his stuff. look at how upbeat he was. >> do is this discourage you from living close to the beach. >> not at all. i'll be back and better than ever. >> he says he'll be back, stronger. he's going to fix up his house. the oth

it has been pounding new jersey, new york, most of new england with heavy snow. many locations in connecticut have had ten, 11, 12 inches of snow, wind-driven with 60-mile-an-hour winds, and now thankfully the snow has ended. eastern long island and up into new england, they're still getting bands of heavy snow, that stretches all the way up into maine and eastern canada. this storm system is looking like a hurricane spinning away here. here's nantucket. it's just south of nantucket in martha's vineyard. there's cape cod. it does look like it may be trying to track off to the north and northwest, which is going to keep new england in wind and rain and snow here throughout much of the rest of the day today. for us, thankfully, all we had late last night, early this morning had been some flurries and sprinkles, a little bit of sleet. just getting a few sprinkles southeast of washington, off to the west, western fairfax and loudoun county. we stayed above freezing and we will through the rest of the morning. we're in the upper 30s to around 40 degrees. rest of the d
