>>> from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. >> right now on the afternoon edition, san francisco law enforcement making a bold promise to crack down on the epidemic of car break-ins. good afternoon, i'm amanda starrantino. >> and i'm ryan yamamoto . we have all been there, you find your car window smashed on the ground, your personal belongings are gone, and officers have responded to more than 13,000 car break-ins, that is slightly down compared to last year's numbers but it is worth noting a lot of people don't even want to report it anymore. the san francisco police chief, bill scott says they plan to use bait cars to catch these thieves. one of the most notorious spots has always been alamo square, we spoke to a tourist, who found herself caught in the middle of her own smash and grab. >> we walked up to the painting lady to look at them, and we just came back to the car and they took our passports, and my computer, my ipod. >> police say they do have ongoing operations starting in hotspots like alamo square but they have to be careful about how they intervene. >> t

u're watching nbc newsyo b >>> back to nbc news bay area tonight. this isn't something we want to hear, especially as we enter the heart of fire season. pg&e facing a backlog when it comes to high risk areas. state officials helping them come up with a plan to fix all this. pg&e has 170,000 outstanding maintenance tags in high fire threat areas. that means the pg&e crew identified something unusual with its equipment which needs to be repaired. we learned pg&e submitted a plan to promises to clear up the backlog by 2029. the agency reviewing the plan has concerns. >> we need to be able to see that they are building the capacity -- the personnel, the equipment, the supply chain, the money -- to be able to repair the issues and maintain the system. >> joining us now, investigative reporter jackson vander beck. alarming to hear all this. why the backlog? thousands of cases. is pg&e fumbling the bag? more trouble spots? >> reporter: the system is ageing and they have a lot of work to do. a lot of these problems are associated with the wires, the lines th
