in a new nbc -- rather abc news "washington post" poll that came out today, registered voters say they'rey certain to vote has jumped significantly compared to 2014. the question remains as to how that enthusiasm will make it, will translate too actual races and voting day. this is democrats face an uphill battle to take control on capitol hill. let's go to larry sabato. larry, the crystal ball where you keep tabs on all the races across the country. get used to hearing that a lot in the next 23 days. pull it out, my friend. let's look at your crystal ball. what are we seeing? because a week ago we didn't quite have the numbers, at least from neophytes like myself. it has really shifted for republicans in many spaces. >> yes. you mean the senate, although you have to balance that with the fact that democrats seem to be solidifying gains in the house. people say how can that happen? how can you have democrats doing better in the house, looking more likely to take control of the house, and at the same time republicans looking much better to hold the senate and maybe even add a seat or two?

shifting towards democrats, while, of course, democrats also have a four-point edge in another new washington post poll, up 69 battleground house districts, better than expected. most of those seats are in these places held by republicans. but if you look at that, that data that would seem positive for the dems, they're walking a tricky line right now, because while indicators to the future can look good, they're addressing party activists upset about trump's win on the supreme court. >> this is not a time to curl up. it is not a time to shut up. it is not a time to give up. it's a time to get up! to rise up! to speak up! it's time for you not to wait for hope, but to be the hope. >> the bottom line is that they may have the power right now, but we need to take it back. and the only way we are going to do that is when we get everyone out to vote. >> and while republicans are publicly saying they're optimistic about november, new reports from behind the scenes show trump aides already prepping for dems to take back the house and sick top investigators on trump world. let's get right to it. cornell

to make matters more interesting, according to a new "washington post" abc news poll out this afternoon, there are signs that kavanaugh's confirmation has actually given a small boost to democrats, at least in the national numbers. 33% of registered voters say they are more likely to support democratic mid-term candidates because of kavanaugh's confirmation, compared to 27% who say they are more likely to support republican candidates. that advantage is being driven, you guessed it, by women, who say the episode draws them towards democrats over republicans, by a 16-point margin. so what the heck is going on right now? are we still looking at a wave? is it more of a sprinkle? are democrats as much of a slam dunk to win back control of congress as everybody thinks? is the senate already lost for democrats? or maybe not? one thing is for sure, nothing can be considered a slam dunk in this political environment. so to talk through all of this, i'm joined by tonight's panel, shauna thomas, vice news washington bureau chief, alfonso augustuilar, former chief of the u.s. office of citizenship

washington, d.c. over what's happened and it looks like the congress is going to do something about it. >> still a lot of questions about what happened in that case. also a new abc news/"washington post" poll finds 51% of americans disprove of justice brett kavanaugh's confirmation to the supreme court. 53% are in favor of further investigation of kavanaugh by congress, and when it comes to women, that number is even higher. 58% want the investigations. that could lead to efforts to remove him from office to continue. is this detrimental to the nation's highest court and is kavanaugh's position in any real jeopardy? >> well, i'll take the second part first. i don't think brett kavanaugh's position is in any real jeopardy. i think the democrats are not going to try to impeach him. one, they probably don't have the votes to do it anyway, and, two, it's probably not a good thing in the midst of this process, but the first part is more important, which is i think over time the supreme court has been politicized. many people think it started with bush v. gore after the 2000 election, but over time, and i think this just added to it, unfortunately, it's one of the last institutions in our
