as you know, former mayor newsom was sworn in as the lieutenant governor in january to 10 -- 2010. mayor lee is the first asian- american mayor in the city's history. 2010, mayor lee was appointed to a second term by mayor newsom. his appointment at the time was confirmed unanimously by the board of supervisors. as city administrator, he spearheaded reform that would be reduced the size and cost of government, from reducing the vehicle fleet, to consolidating departments, to saving tax dollars. he implemented the city's move to cleaner vehicles and infrastructure to support electric vehicles. mayor lee also developed and oversaw implementation of his first 10-year capital plan, to guide our capital and infrastructure investment. mayor lee has a long and distinguished career in san francisco. since 1989, has held a number of senior leadership positions. he is a fellow cal graduate. as you probably all know, last tuesday, november 8, the people of san francisco elected edwin lee in his own right, to serve as mayor of san francisco. let me say, on a personal note, the day before the e

so our formula that began there, and again, i want to publicly thank former mayor newsom for this, as he had that vision. now as of today, mission bay is 64% built out. as you can see right across the street. the hospital is almost halfway there. more than halfway there. under $1.5 billion build of the medical center. that is another attraction and it's attracting the microbusinesses that come here. their square footage tenfolded right in that very same time. i think the companies here, from what i can interview, they're very excited to be here. they really feel the cross fertilization of talent that's coming in within the building. that, again, reflects not on the consistent policy we've had here about technology companies as well as bio, life science, and clean tech industries starting here, staying here, and growing here all at the same time. one of the reasons they can continue to grow is they do have a lot of openness to their interaction between the different companies so they get that kind of innovation going on. that's why we call it the mission bay center. i'm glad to announc

it was previously mayor newsom's seat and supervisor alioto- pier's seat. i did not get into politics because i had a lifelong ambition of being a politician. that is not me. i came from a private sector, and looking at honestly answering the question -- did i have something different to offer that i thought would be valuable to sanford's is go right now? i do think a large part of our problems in the city are financial, economic. with my background, i did think i would be able to add a lot of value, and that is why i decided to get into politics. >> where do you place yourself on the political spectrum? >> i have to say, i'm one that has been trying to get away from the political spectrum dialogue in san francisco. i would just say, generically, i think i am in the middle. i'm a moderate person. nationally, i think we are a little bit left in san francisco, but i think i am a socially liberal person. that is what i tend to practice what i preach. >> what did you learn campaigning for supervisor, and was there anything that surprised you? >> that is a great

a long time ago, back in 2003 -- 2004, it was the assistant for the near gavin newsom, and i volunteered to become deputized to officially over same-sex marriages. it was not only until -- and i presided over al's union and the mayor's office. it was not until 2009 when i was running that i sat down and met with many of the women of the filipino women's network. i was invited to come, and i think we wait -- we went to -- [unintelligible] not in district 10, but i plug it anyway. you know, i was sent over by former mayor gavin newsom to new orleans a few years ago, and we study what had happened there, and we realized that one of the things that had occurred in new orleans was a breakdown between city government and the neighborhoods, and such that when the hurricane hit and the flooding happened, so many people left the city, and then they did not come back. because there was no relationship between local government and many of the neighborhoods and many of the residence. that lesson burned in my mind for a very long time. so it is that much more important, general, that when you put this fleet we together, that you made a disaster preparedness a thing -- the inme vision to the celebration of our armed forces. you have not only touch our city government, but you have helped me touch every neighborhood in this city. that is what we need to do in all of our cities. so thank you very much, general, for your leadership on this. thank you. harris was elected to be the state of the new general, and gavin newsom elected george gascon to be the district attorney. when asked his position on the death penaltiy, hy, he said he wouldn't rule it out. this raised a lot of concern among opponents of the death penalty who thought this would be a step backward. he has written against the death penalty, and adheres to san francisco values. san francisco has not had a jury return a death verdict since 1989, which was 10 years before he said his office would not seek the death penalty. we thought this particular issue wanted a discussion and we are pleased to have a palace here today. let me introduce them more at length. geroge gastcocon has had a long career in law enforcement, and he works for decades in the l.a. police department, serving as the director of the office of operations in charge of patrol and detectives and special operations. he is considered to be an expert in matters of police accountability. john thompson spent 14 years on death row, and after his verdict was set aside he was then facing life in prison. he was fight

it was signed into law by mayor newsom.at position, a number of cities throughout the state of california and around the country have followed our lead. the motivation by many cities are ranges from just saving money, in trying to spare the additional impact to their landfills, to something more noble, like contributing to the larger cause of environmental degradation and the global climate crisis, where local governments feel some of the boy from the federal government in the ability to execute a proper or meaningful response. this an area of the normal, common plastic bag blowing around everywhere. how we can share vehicles and reduce carbon emissions and all of those great goals that mayor gavin newsome had announced that we wanted to really do enthusiastically. so if you see right in front of city hall the example that we gave everybody, the green car showcase, that began with our effort to signal that we were willing to even give up city parking spaces. you know how valuable city parking spaces are, we have wars within city government around who's parking spaces those are. but to signal a big culture change, one that we felt was important to our future of the city in reducing cars, we made it our own goal to reduce our own city fleet and begin with that commitment first. so we did it, we did it with everybody's cooperation, m.t.a., city administrator as well as our purchaser to create that green car showcase. but we also realize there are many parts of the city as david mentioned that don't have ready access to public garages. so it was for us a challenge but one that we were very enthusiastic to try to pilot with city car share, and that is to get it into our most congested reside
