gavin newsom versus ron desantis. two governors, two ideologies, one telling prime time showdown tonight. you're watching getting answers. i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. it is attracting outsized attention. tonight's long awaited political jousting match between california's gavin newsom and florida's ron desantis. desantis is running for president next year, though his star is fading, while newsom is not so why all the hoopla? joining us live now to break it all down is abc seven news political insider phil matier. so phil, what is going on here? why are they doing this? well, they're doing each one has its own reasons and one of them is ron desantis is running for president, but he's not exactly leading the pack. >> donald trump is, as a matter of fact, he's neck and neck with former south carolina governor nikki haley for the second place spot and some people say it's fading. gavin newsom, he is sort of becoming the democratic stalwart out there and he's raising his national profile and he wants to be in t

look, newsom and harris have been political cousins. there is a worry it creates friction moving forward especially as we enter into the fray full throated of the 2024 campaign. that is something to pay attention to. that is much more of a problem for management on what is going on behind-the-scenes than the white house specific concern that governor newsom would eclipse biden. >> any chance, though, hair sis not on the ticket with president biden? >> there is a lot that can happen between now and the convention. there is a lot of events that can unfold. this is really a topsy turvy season. unprecedented debate. we used that term like crazy. but unprecedented times where anything can happen. if donald trump does not do well in iowa but it looks like he will, or new hampshire, his campaign is on the ropes, nikki haley, and trump will not sit it out. there is a lot to go in terms of what happens in the next couple of weeks and months before we get there. >> do you think governor newsom is doing a good job for the rest of the country he is

and why not take on gavin newsom if he does?, but what what are the risks for desantis? yeah, i mean, the upsides are incredibly obvious. he's been on a fairly crowded debate stage within the gop primary this is going to be a one on one in front of an audience of people who want to listen to this. and he's got the better of the issues. the risk here, though, is that he stumbles himself. the risk is that gavin newsom, who, by the way, we might not like his policies, he's pretty good up on a stage. he can certainly he's got a bit of a silver tongue. he could embarrass desantis. he could also, you know, highlight some of the things that potentially are causing desantis more problems in his own primary situation. so, i mean, i think the biggest issue for him is this would be an unforced error, meaning it's not something he has to do to engage in the primary. but if he if he handles it well, it could give him a boost. but, dan, just let me get back to your point about biden. i guess my question is, with the poll numbers so bad with h

gavin newsom good on his feet, smooth with his words. you can have the fact pattern, you have to have delivery, that matters, emily. >> emily: that is true, and i think here many feel that governor newsom has a shine to him. but many feel it is sort of a greasy political stain. he can come off poorly. desantis can come off grounded and measured in a leadership way, others see that as paling, there is performance element that will matter. i say that with resignation, staggering facts here are so crucial for viewers to understand, it doesn't matter, it is filth. that is one out of eight resident in florida versus one out of 18 in california. the population surges in florida, it declines in california and yet unemployment rate in california is among highest in tcountry. the list goes on in every facet where california has plummeted in performance and value and florida is thriving. the "wall street journal," they illustrate the scorecard between florida and california say i'll bet you in my own words, newsom will ignore this, deflect and foc
