here in the newsroom, bob redell. a rec and park worker accused of running over and killing a woman in holly park. chase cain is live in san francisco with the charges that worker is now facing. good morning, chase. >>> good morning, john. some rather serious felony charges in part because the prosecutors say that parts worker left the scene after he apparently ran over a woman who was sun bathing here on the grass in holly park about six weeks ago. that young mother was lying there where you see this memorial with her 11-month-old and her dog. the parks worker that is being charged with her death turned himself in late yesterday. 58-year-old tom bernoski had, woulded for parks and recs here in san francisco for some time. the district attorney charged him with felonyjv hit and run vehicular manslaughter, because it was in early september when he was driving a green parks and rec truck. apparently drove that truck off the path, hit this young mother and killed her while she lay there sun bathing on the grass. the 35-

"newsroom" starts now. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >>> good morning. i'm carol costello. thanks so much for being here. well, here we are, it's october 16th and the nation is on the edge of default, in other words, we're staring down the very debt crisis that lawmakers told us not to worry about. i wonder what the reassurances and promises congress could come together at crunch time and not risk an economic disaster. as you can see from the countdown clock the deadline is less than 15 hours away, the debt ceiling closes in, the partial government shutdown drags on and washington's dysfunction is shaming even the lawmakers. >> it's not a big thing or don't worry about it, that's ridiculous. this is a big thing and going to harm not just this economy but economies all over the world. and we're not going to do that. if we do, i think they should all ask for our resignation. they should ask for all of our resignations if we can't come together for the good of our country. >> okay, let's get the latest from cnn's jim acosta at the white house this morning. good morning. >> rep

oh what a relief it is. >>> welcome back to the newsroom.ka whitfield in for carol costello. the government shutdown in its fourth day and with no signs of a compromise. top lawmakers are scrambling to adjust. president obama had canceled a trip to an asian economic summit. secretary of state john kerry will take his place. and at this hour house republicans are needing to walk through their party's next steps. the house passed sefrlt several separate bills only to see them rejected by the senate. democrats continue to press for clean proposals with no changes to obama care. and now there are international concerns because many people in charge of overseeing sanctionses on iran have been furloughed. joining me now from boston is former ambassador to nato nicholas byrd. so how do these furloughs, in your view, impact the u.s.' ability to monitor iran? >> iran is not off the hook. the sanctions are in place. but when you can't staff the treasury department responsible for implementing the sanctions and the state department, you have a problem.
