you're live in the "cnn newsroom." i'm jim acosta in washington. good evening. we begin this hour with a chaotic day of extreme weather across the u.s. and two corners in particular from scorching temperatures out west to deadly flooding in the northeast. all the rainfall in central new hampshire streaming down this mountainside and into town, where the water shut down roads and damaged cars. the downpours in pennsylvania taking especially tragic toll as authorities north of philadelphia say flash floods have now killed at least five people, including members of a family visiting from south carolina whose car was swept away. the storms also put major airports in new york and boston under ground stops. earlier this afternoon, the conditions forced airlines to cancel about 1,400 flights nationwide. our polo sandoval joins us from new york. it has just been a very messy weekend weather-wise. polo. what else are you hearing about the weather's impact on air travel? >> reporter: jim, it has been troublesome for potentially

grant lotus joins us live from the newsroom. grant, what's the latest? well, vic in l a this is something state officials say they're taking very seriously. >> we know that high heat is expected to arrive starting friday, lasting through monday and the national weather service says the upcoming temperatures will rival some of the worst heat waves the bay area has ever seen. today officials shared the state is investing more than 400 million dollars to prepare residents for the extreme heat. that funding, they say will go towards protecting farm workers and others with jobs that involve a lot of outdoor activity. the money will also go towards a public awareness and education campaign and towards hiring community health educators to get the word out about severe weather groups most at risk of heat related illness. young children, older adults, pregnant people, people with chronic medical conditions. those who live in urban city settings, homeless people and people who work extensively outdoors. as we mentioned, a doctor we chatted with says it is importan

this is "cnn newsroom." >>> u.s.upreme court ended its term on friday with two highly controversial rulings. president biden's ambition plan to wipe out hundreds of billions in student loan debt was struck down as unconstitutional, 6-3. the other big decision, 6-3, ruled that a christian web designer in colorado who denied her services to a same-sex couple. jeremy diamond has the stories. >> reporter: president biden making clear on friday the supreme court was wrong in striking down his student debt relief. the president saying the supreme court closed one path but saying now we are going to pursue another. that path lies in the education act of 1965. the president is going to try to get student loan debt relief. how many americans exactly? that much is not yet clear. white house officials declining to say whether that figure will be more or less than the estimated 40 million americans which would have benefitted under this program struck down by the supreme court. in the meantime, the president offering some relief
