millions of people see the "national enquirer" on the newsstand every week but now they don't see theism. so this story was broken wide open by a newspaper. but it wasn't the "new york times," it wasn't the "los angeles times" "washington post" or "a.p." first to reveal the hush company scheme. it was actually rupert murdoch's paper, the "wall street journal." some people forget that the first story was actually published before election day, four days before election day in 2016. further stories came out earlier this year, and michael rothfeld has been on top of it from the beginning. he's joining me now here in new york. michael, great to see you. >> great to see you. >> it is a sense of satisfaction when you see cohen finally admit to something he had been denying in the past? i mean, your reporting is two years old about this and now he's finally confessing. >> it really is, because this was kind of a classic journalistic effort of peeling away layers of the onion, starting, as you said, two years ago with the karen mcdougal story and the "national enquirer," which ultimately led,

old like crazy off the newsstands. in one of the very, very few times that si newhouse ever intervened at random house, he said we ought to do a book with this fella. i had arrived at random house with the mandate of doing books of this kind, biographies of high-profile figures. i like to put it tasked. i went to see trump with si and our then publisher. i took a big russian novel that, generations a winner, wrapped black and gold paper around it, put trump's name on it, and brought it to trump tower and showed it to him and said this could be you. o and behold, he agreed. actually he wanted the trump name slightly larger. we made a deal with him at that moment. this is extraordinary. no lawyers. we had no bargaining. we told him what we wanted to pay, which is not a lot of money, but not ridiculous, $250,000 for the rights in every conceivable way. and then tony schwartz showed up. tony was a journalist who worked at "newsweek" and the "new york times," and his idea was "at art of the deal." he regrets it profoundly n

before president trump took that newsstand today, too bad that he will veto any spending bill that does not have no money for the wall, he was sending the opposite signal yesterday and his political base was lashing out at him for appearing to cave on a key immigration promise from 2016. it's interesting that overnight, the president seem to change the headline about by mollifying his political base with an abrupt announcement that the u.s. is pulling troops from syria, which was another key promise, of course, in 2016 about not being the world's policeman. now while the president is getting kudos from his base for seeming to stand tall on both the wall funding and that move you mentioned in syria followed by news he's also planning to start to bring u.s. troops home from afghanistan as well, on the negative side for him, that sparked a domino effect of the foreign secretary james matters revealingly today he is resigning effective the end of february. a senior defense official telling jennifer griffin this was not a forced exit. he'd met with the president at 3:00 p.m. eastern to deliv
