this for a group of people out there who felt the consensus was a liberal consensus for "time" and "newsweek" and other magazines were not speaking for them. in fact, they opposed everything that appeared in the magazines. they wanted to break the consensus. so i think that gave national review a lot of its excitement. of course, they got some very good writers at the time to write for them. a lot of former leftists among others. including the guy who wrote many of the best scripts for the marxx brothers. it was funny and humorous. something in which "dissent" has never been accused of being, unfortunately. what i think about and what we try to do in 30 seconds or so is to provide people on the broad left in america with reflections as to use ways to think about what is going on in the country and world in a way that is not possible in a weekly magazine and in a way that is not possible online. and to do it with, i hope, some style of prose and some sense that things are complex and political morality and decency to use michael walter's terms. we have a great website updated daily. it is beg

you may not know that "newsweek" recently recognized oakland as the second best can do city in america. in looking at 200 cities, they evaluated an interesting set of criteria, and i want to read through them very quickly because i think you will find them interesting. they looked at emissions -- 13 major pollutants/the population to create a carbon footprint for oakland. they look at the increase in building permits, the increase in lead-certified buildings. they looked at the number of people who have health care. they looked at people over 25 getting college degrees. they looked at the number of it -- the increase in the number of people taking public transportation and walking to work. on the basis of all of those, concluded that we are the second-best can do city in the country. and we have known that for a long time. i want to end this with a couple of comments -- many of you know that i am very much a political animal and that i have had a very long will the -- love affair with this city, and it continues, so i want to give you a little bit of political advice. you prole another

when it comes to the trayvon martin case, 80% of blacks tell "newsweek" they believe the shooting wasially motivated. 35% of whites agree with that. for more on this case, i want to bring in karen russell and b.j. bernstein, an attorney and former assistant district attorney in gwinnett county, georgia. thank you for joining me, ladies. karen, i'm going to begin with you. we are seeing a growing number of polls showing this divide between how african-americans and whites view this shooting. does that ever manifest itself in a courtroom? >> i'm not sure that it's going to manifest itself in the courtroom. i think what people want is more thorough of an investigation. i think they want to know what happened that night and while zimmerman is free, we won't have those facts. >> how worried are you that we're ever going to have those facts, karen, because given the reports about potential bungling by the sanford police department and not putting into evidence things that ought to have been put there, will we get the answers that everybody is looking for? >> it's discouraging. but i think t
