it ended up "newsweek" didn't have anybody down there and "newsweek" commissioned me to do color for them. i had shot some color going in just because i didn't know what to expect. then i had to go back the second day for them. so i took the pan am to new york to jfk and there were about nine loads of people waiting in line to get through customs. jim and i get in there. i have to call the office. tell them we're delayed. i said i have to call "newsweek" because they're holding the magazine open. they've got the full staff there and it's on a friday, friday afternoon. i call them and i said, look, i don't know how long it's going to take. they said, don't worry, when ever you get here, the lab is open, everything, all the editors are here. i remember walking down this hallway. jim was on the phone. it was like a dead-end hallway and i looked through the hallway and see this customs officer with a gold braid sitting at his desk. i tapped on his door and said i'm terribly sorry to disturb you and i told him the story about just returning from jonestown. jim and i were trying to get bac

to switch from doing government documentary photography to news photography, the washington post, newsweek, they were all they are. and i pursued that. it never happened. i did wind up getting hired by the u.s. chamber of commerce, across the street from the white house. at the time, they had the largest magazine in the country, the nations magazine now i am the chief photographer nick for nations business magazine, across from the white house. it is 1983 i hear that vice president bush's photographer was leaving and going to get a job with time magazine. the photographer for the associated press told me about that. i explained where i had been as a government photographer. versus eric draper had been with the associated press, eric went on to be george w's photographer. i was coming out of the government. most people that work at the white house get the job because they worked on the campaign. since i did not do that, i had to figure out another way of getting in. i did some research and found that the vice president's photographer works for the vice presidents press secretary. so i wrote
