you wrote an incredibly powerful blog after newtown about your experiences with your child. what is it your child is going through, and how difficult is it to get help, financially, and also, i'm told from a lot of parents, unless your child commits an act of violence, it's very hard to get people to intervene? >> that's very true, unfortunately, anderson. my blog post was written when my personal tragedy of having to put my son in an acute care facility, intersected with the horrible public tragedy of newtown, and i also have children in elementary school as well, so my first thought, when i heard the shooting was, my god, what if it's my son one day, and my second thought was, i have to hug my babies. >> how old is your son? >> he's 13 now. it's interesting, we have been talking about first-person shooters. my son who struggles with mental health doesn't like to play violent shooter games. he likes his stuffed animals. i'm really glad we can focus on the stigma issue. it's something incredibly hard to talk about. you don't have access to resources. we spent a lot of time t

senate holds its first hearing on gun legislation since newtown.hat hearing in the senate judiciary committee includes an emotional statement at the top from former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords. she encourages congress to be bold. january 31st, the vice president personally attends the senate democrats' weekly policy luncheon. the vice president attended in order to help coordinate the push for the administration's gun violence proposals. then it's february. february 4th, the first monday in february, monday this week, president obama takes the push for gun legislation on the road. he goes to minneapolis, minnesota, to give a nationally televised speech on gun safety reform in front of a tableaux of law enforcement. the president surrounded by local law enforcement officials as he delivers that speech and praises minneapolis as a model of how realistic gun reform can work to reduce gun violence. then tuesday, yesterday, the push for gun safety reform gets bipartisan. republican senator dean heller of nevada comes out for universal backgroun

physicians in newtown and the newtown action alliance.our group of physicians is over 100 demrs newtown who are on the same platform, some are republican, some democrat, but we're all in the same platform about assault weapons and gun violence. i'm the e.m.s. medical director for newtown. i'm afriend of some of the families that lost loved ones and i was the e.r. doctor that was on shift on december 14. what is my goal? my goal is to convince you that banning assault rifles and real gun control measures that l make a difference. research has been severely limited. i had to go overseas to see some real data to see what the real answers are. in scotland in 1996, a shooter got off 109 rounds, he killed 16 little children and a teach earn injured another 27 kids and four more teachers. in australia in the same year, a 28-year-old with an ar-15 assault rifle killed 35 people and injured another 23. the damage caused by an assault rifle compared to a regular gun is horrific. some of the injuries is so bad that there is nothing salvageable. they

the town of newtown, connecticut has three detectives on its police force. and on december 14th, when calls started coming in about a possible shooting at the elementary school at sandy hook in newtown, one of the town's three detectives, a detective named jason frank, was off duty. he was not at work. so presumably he did not have his uniform on. we know he did not have his weapon with him. but he heard the call anyway and he drove to the scene. he drove to the school. now, at that point police had already found the body of the shooter. the young man who had ended the massacre when he shot and killed himself. so at that point police were making sure that there wasn't a second shooter. making sure that the massacre was over. and they were moving through the school methodically, door by door, clearing each room, making sure there were no other perpetrators on the loose. and of course getting the surviving kids and staff members out of that school to safety. this was the time we learned later when the police had to convince the teachers and the staff members b

this is the first federal election since the newtown school shooting.hicago is a city that has had real problems with gun violence. and the confluence of those factors have made this kind of an interesting test case. what maybe should have been a cakewalk for debbie halvorson, who had the highest name recognition in the case ended up turning into a dogfight, at least heading into today's voting from what we could tell from the polling. election officials today reported relatively low turnout at the polls, probably the result of this being a special election primary in an offyear. special elections in general tend to generate less voter interest. it also could have been the result of this. this is how it looked today in chicago. what do you like better? rain, sleet, snow? chicago had a good offering of all three today. so again the turnout today was reported to be low. but at this hour we can report a result in this race. with 67% of precincts now reporting, the associated press has declared former state lawmaker robin kelly the winner tonight. former de
