people live in newtown, because it is a great place to raise a family. that is why we moved there.h of my kids went to sandy hook elementary. my wife is a 6th grade teacher in town, two of the students killed that day lived in my small neighborhood. the gunman and his mother lived a street over from us. one of these precious children killed hawkly whose mother is here today lived across the street from the gunman. last friday would have been dillon's 7th birthday. it was a snow day, i was traveling and my wife and children were home but i received a text message from them rather than building a snow man out of a foot of snow that had fallen, they build a cup cake and with food coloring colored the icing purple which has dillan's favorite color. 13-year-old, children, and the boy, first grader across the street whose face is on the cover of the new york times on december 15th, they should be building snow men, they should not be building memorials. to lose so many people who are young so quickly in such a mall town, it is impossible to get your mind around it, there is just too much

newtown has happened since. but also, a much more pedestrian change has happened since in colorado, one that may have profoundly changed the realm of what is possible in colorado. it's what happened in the last election. colorado's governor is john hickenlooper, a democrat. colorado's senate had been democratic controlled before. in the november election, colorado's house also went democratic. so colorado now is all blue. not by huge margins. not by overwhelming numbers, but it's blue. in the legislature and the governor's house. that meant when newtown happened, after aurora and after columbine -- i mean, after aurora, before that, after all the other experience that colorado has had with gun violence, today colorado decided to change some things. after all those previous things, nothing had changed. today, something started to change. today has been a very dramatic day. seven pieces of gun-related legislation moving one after the other through the state legislature today. the first one was about domestic viole

after newtown, the american public was in shock and anger. something could have happened and it didn't. the president formed a task force headed by vice president biden, that took a month, they talked about recommendations for a few weeks. senate majority leader harry reid finally introduced a bill last week. it didn't even have an assault weapons ban in it. did they go about this strategically the wrong way? >> well, you know, i don't think so. i'm sorry, david, i think that point is ridiculous. you look at just background checks. over 90% of the american people agree with the president that we should at least get background checks done. 92%? david, you have been in politics. what gets 92%? puppies, free money, sex with angelina jolie or both of them depending on your preference? this is democrats' fault, too. it really is. this is not the president's fault. he could not have spoken more forcefully about this at the state of the union. i think the american people, 80% something are behind other gun control measures. this is ridiculous that w

did the president wait too long after newtown? could he have done this faster and might that have gotten a better package for gun control advocates with more momentum behind it? >> well, chris, after newtown we thought, we understood that it was a huge priority for congress to act quickly on legislation to reduce gun violence and for the president and the administration to do everything that they could. as you recall, we acted really quickly to put forward a package, both executive actions and what we thought the congress should do. we did this not as part of the state of the union, we did it not even before the state of the union, but before the president was sworn in because we knew there was a window here that was really important to act on where we thought we had the best chance of getting gun legislation through, which, as you know, has been historically very difficult to do. so, that is why the president acted. that's why the president acted as quickly as he did. i'm not sure congress moves as fast as even members of congres
