newtown was in some ways a turning point for this country. there's a perception that if nothing changed after newtown, nothing will change in future. that brings up the nra. the argument identify seen on fe people from twitter is it plays into the hands of the nra or plays into the hands of people that don't want to see any legislation happen because it takes away attention from the horrific act that was committed. where do you stand on that? >> i absolutely agree. it lends itself to this implication we have seen over and over again that these are just isolated events. this is something that occurs that we can't stop from occurring. that's something that lends itself to that implication. it takes away from the larger picture which is the fact that on the same day as the ucc shooting, an average of about 30 or 32 other americans were also killed by gun violence. this happens every single day. this is something we should be talking about every single day. this is not just some random occurrence that occurs every once in a while. this is a patte

the large clips that were popularized tragically in newtown and aurora and tucson. we want these off the streets. >> the nra -- >> i don't like the nra, and i could care less what they think about me. they don't represent the best interests of this country and families. bring it on. i have zero respect for their leadership. i have a lot of respect for their members. and their members have not been well served by their leadership. any law-abiding citizen is not impacted by this what's. there's just a simple -- what's. there's just a simple process. to the extent you have a felony in your background and you're possessing of a gun, current law says you can't have that gun of we're going to make it easier to relinquish that gun. to the extent we have data that's not being shared with the federal government, we want that to be more easily shared. i don't know why the nra would be so upset, but they're upset by anything that doesn't increase the number of guns on the street. which is insanity beyond words. i don't even know how to describe or couch the absurdity of their

many thought the tragedy in newtown would be the thing that finally brought congress again. but, again, the background checks, gun show loophole, assault weapons ban, all of those things that have been on the table since many of those provisions in 2004 were unable to pass. the effort collapsed then. the president made reference to the fact that after each shooting in newtown, tucson, charleston, he has come out and gives a routine statement. he said the reporting on it is routine. he said that people have become numb to it and he once again asked americans to vote on the basis of this issue which obviously has not been done. this is a recurring theme of the president. so the president implicitly admitting once again there's very little he can do politically to push this through congress even as progress is made for gun control advocates at the local level. at the federal level it's still a third rail. it's not moving through a congress right now that's controlled by republicans, the house and senate. and the frustration that the president feels after each incident quite evi

hear of this, i should mention this is the 142nd school shooting since that open fire in sandy hook, newtown connect. as a detective what are you thinking? >> location like this in the middle of nowhere, you would think big name college campus like that, something like this happening but it could happen anywhere. what we have to realize is, the advent having armed people, you have, someone like this, you have a lot of body count, 13 dead, another 20 shot, you must have someone that is able to combat that and have a firearm. i understand this, they don't want guns on campus but you have to. we're dealing with something. doesn't have to be a terrorist from isis doing this type of stuff. this could be a lone individual which the investigation has just started. we don't know if he was alone. we have to look at social media, look at everything and what happened, what was the motive behind this but with that said, we have to realize this could happen i in where. people are negative people carrying fire arms in colleges and schools we have to deal with it. you have technologies available like cop s

columbine, newtown, and now oregon. all over the country, this is happening in a repetitive way, and it's important to use this occasion to reflect upon the dangers that we are ignoring, the epidemic that we are ignoring, but i think we also have to realize that mass shootings, as horrendous as they are, are not the bulk of the crimes committed with guns and the deaths dealt by guns in this country, but those are everyday criminals, abusive spouses and, sadly, people taking their own lives. don't forget that those 30,000 deaths a year of our fellow citizens are not all in mass shooting situations, but they involve many other circumstances. so what's the solution? a friend of mine in maine coined the term, which i think aptly applies -- in fact, it probably applies in this case more than any other -- there is no silver bullet. there may, however, be silver buckshot. a multiplicity of solutions. no single solution. nothing we do here today in the way of background checks or anything else is going to solve this problem ent

those old vestages of hatred are not enough. >> joining us is nicole, who lost her 6-year-old son in newtownconnecticut, now the president of sandy hook promise, pushing for tougher gun control laws. thank you for being with us. as always, we're just very sorry about the circumstances in which we're talking to you. what was your reaction yesterday when you first heard the news of what was going on in oregon? >> i was going into a meeting right as i heard the news. and i tried immediately not to think about it, in hon allesty. that's impossible. i went into my meeting and i got ten words out of my mouth before i burst into tears because i just so horribly know what that community's going through in what those families are going through. >> nicole, why do you try to not think about it? >> because it's so painful. it's -- it's just really impossible to understand how this continues to happen and the thoughts and the prayers, the anger is not enough. there's action. and after every incident, it's the same thing. we hear the same arguments. we need more guns, we need less guns, we need this polic

thank you for having these two brave young women because they bring back to me the memories of newtownere on that day when 20 young children and six great educators lost their life like in oregon. my hope is we will strengthen the background check bill that exists now, the law provides for sales after 72 hours. permits those sales by federally licensed dealer if the background is complete. in the last five years, 15,729 ineligible buyers have gained access to weapons, including the shooter in charleston. we can close this loophole and require that there be a background check for every gun that is sold. no check, no gun, no sale. and that's the basic principle. >> i was going to say the push back is that it is hard to write these laws because of privacy laws, because mental health, if someone has not been treated or has been treated, it becomes more difficult for that to show up on a background check because of privacy laws. >> good point. mental health is a major issue. we need to provide more resources, better treatment. you're absolutely right, andrea, that privacy laws are sometimes

virginia tech, columbine, charleston, sandy hook, newtown. and now roseburg. they are shorthand for mass slaughters which have occurred at the rate of about one a week while president obama has been in office. there have been 142 school shootings since newtown alone. 30,000 deaths per year in america, the greatest, strongest country in the history of the world. and the mass killings are not even the source of the largest numbers. they are individual deaths, like javier martinez, a young man from new haven with an enormous ly promising and bright future. when i visited his school after he was killed by a gun, because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, his classmates asked me to talk here about gun violence. not as an abstract notion but a real threat to them and the their community. it is a phenomenon that faces every community, every day, everywhere and everyone, and all of us are touched by it. if we think about it, if we put aside the denial that all too often affects us, a denial that causes people to minimize the threat, we all are victims or we

we lived through a tragic and gut-wrenching episode of mass destruction in newtown, connecticut. senator cassidy has had his own experience with mass tragedy. and the reality is that the reasons why we see these episodes of mass shootings are complicated. but if you read the report on adam lanza's intersection with connecticut's mental health system, you see that it failed him. it failed him and it failed his family. i don't know that correcting the mental health system alone would have changed what happened in newtown, but i know if we fix our mental health system, wield have a downward pressure on the episodes of mass violence that in this country. but as senator cassidy said, we should fix our mental health system because it's broken for everyone, regardless of whether an individual has a predisposition towards violence. because of course the reality is people with mental illness are much more likely to be the victims of violence than they are the perpetrators of violence. there is no inherent connection between mental illness and violence. but these mat shootings have drawn t

secondly, you brought the question up about the shooter in newtown.s because the person that supplied the gun was killed by the shooter. if you had the people who supply the guns liable and there's lawsuits or criminal prosecutions, that might help. putting dealers on the hook, you have to be very careful about this because we get back into the privacy of mentally ill people. there are ways we can put pressure on people who supply the guns. not make them not supply the guns. i don't have a problem with that. but to make sure they have some responsibility who they sell too. those are some things in the debate. >> ryan, i think one of the biggest things, you can't say that. that's a rude thing for you to say to charles. >> is there an idea you would support? i have an answer if you would like. >> i would like to say i think, as i was saying, i think it is an extraordinary complicated issue and i think one of the greatest dangers is that we do what we always do in washington and across the country. we have a major reaction to a tragedy that doesn't apply
