i remember getting the call from president obama after i left the white house, after newtown, and ithis is the first time i've cried in the oval office and remember he teared up again in anger when the congress wouldn't act, even in the face of the slaughter of young people. i texted with a senator on the democratic side this morning and i said, what are the chances of something happening here? he said zero. zero. >> well, that's -- that's the issue here. there are things they can do. there are things that are pending that passed the house, that are sitting and waiting in the senate. and there are things that are popular with the american public. you know, expanding background checks, red flag laws, so if you see somebody who is acting nuts, you can say, wait a minute, put a red flag next to this person's name, this person should not, you know, get a gun. banning high capacity magazines, that kind of thing, common sense reforms. and this is why you saw the president so angry and frustrated because quite frankly he's been working on this since 1994, when the congress passed at the ass

you look at the folks from newtown. they're doing better a decade removed. as you drive down main street here and pass the city hall, there's a memorial across the street. there's american flags everywhere. there are pictures of students, graduating seniors, staked into the ground. you know, scholastic achievements and wanting to honor them, and right across the street from that is a plaza with a fountain and a memorial of 21 people who have been killed, 19 students who will not only not make it to high school, they won't make it to middle school, because they died between the ages of 8 and 10. there's a lot of anger on multiple fronts, the police response is at the forefront of that. they cannot comprehend at this point how you can have 19 law enforcement officers inside of a hallway at 12:03 and 47 minutes later, it's federal agents who are overriding the guidance that they were provided to break in and to kill the gunmen. they can't still fathom that. and also, the guns, the fact that it is so accessible, not necessarily, obviously, this is texas. people

abby, in newtown, connecticut.er, that teacher at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. i don't know, my understanding you may not have been able to hear the press conference that just happened so if i can just give you a couple of headlines. we know now that the police officials believe it was the wrong decision not to breach that door. not to go into the school. the gunman fired more than 100 rounds but it was a harrowing series of 911 calls including from two children. including calls saying that there are people still alive in here. there are students still alive in here. and two calls begging to please send in the police. and during that time, apparently, the incident scene commander made the decision that this was not an active shooter situation. it was about an hour and 20 minutes, sarah, to pick up on what you just said from the time shots were first fired. an hour and 20 minutes until they breached that door and stopped the shooter. what goes through your mind when you hear that as som

let me make some points about it that i have made ten years ago after the newtown massacre.hat it is off the charts compared to any other advanced country in the world. according to estimates by the university of washington, we have eight times the rate of gun homicides compared to canada, 50 times compared to germany, 100 times compared to the uk, and a staggering 250 times compared to japan. so when people talk about the mental state of the shooter, just keep asking yourself about those numbers. do we have 50 times the rate of mentally disturbed people as germany? or is our level of violence in movies and video games 250 times more than that watched and consumed in japan? obviously not. so what explains our exceptional rates of gun killings? well, there is one area where we are exceptional, the number of guns that are easily available in america. with 4% of the world's population, we have almost 50% of the world's guns. there are more guns in people's possession than there are people in the united states. it's easy for an 18-year-old in texas to buy ar-15 style rifles whos

she's a member of the junior newtown action alliance and networks to raise awareness about gun violenceeyna, thank you for getting up early on a sunday to talk to us. i want to first, if i could, get your reaction to the moment that you heard of this school shooting in texas. i have to imagine that stirred some emotions in you. >> yeah, definitely. i found out on instagram, and as it was unfolding my hands were shaking, and definitely brought back a lot of memories for me of when i was in a similar situation ten years ago. at 7 years old, sitting in my classroom, and waiting for help to come, and then once i got to the firehouse, waiting for my mom to come get me, go back home and get out of there, so it definitely hit close to home for me because this is an elementary school. every shooting is hard, but this one is particularly hard, just because it is quite similar, so it definitely brought a lot of those memories and emotions back for me. >> i thought it was interesting, i read you said when you saw your mom at the fire station, that was the first sense of safety you felt. is that ri

we're outraged after the news of uvalde, my colleagues in newtown, we were crying in the hallways.to run to the bathroom to get ourselves together before class. i had the honor of speaking along with many educators and activists a few days ago in houston where we gathered with the two largest teachers organizations, the nea and aft. and the palpable passion and fear and outrage was just resinating in the room. people are fed up and are going to organize and we're not used to seeing teach thers that way, but we're doing it. and i don't think anybody should be complacent. poem are afraid for their children. they are afraid for their neighbors. where can you go that's safe? i heard president biden talking in a speech earlier about freedoms, about the freedom to live. gun vie slens a leading cause of death for our children. something must be done. we're going to keep fighting whether this is a long game or whether something will happen in congress. but we have to keep talking about this. don't be afraid to tell your story. don't be afraid to talk about the teachers you worry for. the c

you covered the mass shooting in newtown, connecticut, which happened while president biden was vice president. what are you hearing from the white house this morning? >> well, jose, as you said, i covered newtown, connecticut and i remember the mourning and the pain of those parents. i will never forget tiny coffins and 6-year-olds in suits going to funerals and i thought the world would change after that and today what i'm hearing from white house officials a decade ago, we have to turn pain into action talking specifically about assault weapons, talking about specifically trying to change background checks and the procedures that people have to get these guns but i don't really hear whether or not they actually have a strategy to move forward other than the fact they want people to know something has to change. i want you to also listen to senate majority leader chuck schumer as you said, who is saying he'll force a vote on gun measures. here is what he had to say this morning. >> it is unacceptable to the american people to think that there are not ten of my republican colleagues

every time there is a mass shooting, think newtown, las vegas, parkland, the list goes on, there arer high capacity magazines. and they face a lot of road blocks on capitol hill. senate democrats took steps tuesday night to place a bill called the enhance background checks act of 2021 on to the legislative calendar. and that bill which passed the house tries to close what is known as the charleston loophole which allows some begugun sales go through before a background check is even complete. it was how dylann roof was able to kill nine black parishioners at that church in south carolina. the legislation would increase only the waiting period from 3 to 10 days before handing over a gun to someone. but even though it got republican votes in the house, there is no sign that it would pass the senate. the other bill on the table that easily passed the house, h ar-8 would expand background checks for all sales in the country. but the same story with that bill, it doesn't currently have the backing to overcome the 60 vote threshold and pass in the senate. so if congress won't do anything,
