the target, the nfl. the miami dolphins, the denver broncos, and the new york giants, plus what the suit calls john doe teams, number 1 to 29, in other words, all of them. indicating he hopes others will join to form a class action suit the man filing it, the former head coach of the dolphins brian flores the suit says mr. flores has determined that the only way to effectuate real change is through the courts where the nfl's conduct can be judged by a jury of mr. flores's peers, a judgment that is long overdue. the 58 page document filed late this afternoon in the southern district of new york, chalk full of explosive allegations, among them, discrimination in coach flores' interview process with the broncos and the giants and in his termination from the dolphins just last month further, he says, the miami owner, steven ross wanted him to lose games on purpose so that the dolphins could get the number one draft pick. that owner, ross, offered coach flores $100,000 per loss, but flores says as his team ins

as a former nfl player, and i love the nfl. it's done wonderful things for myself and my family. it still doesn't matter. we're seen as people who can't lead. i'm speaking african-americans. there's a notion of african-american quarterbacks not being able to perform at the level of white quarterbacks. there's a notion of white african-american coaches not being able to perform at the level of white coaches and so on and so forth. we still have that narrative in the nfl and it starts with ownership. >> professor, i should say that you worked with jim rooney in collecting some of the data. team s have to interview two external mienority candidates fr the head coach position. one for offense and defensive coordinator. it's almost 20 years old. goal was to bring some equity in the positions. what is failing? the rule clearly isn't bringing that equity. >> that's a great question. it's a question i've been trying to tackle over the last of the five, six years. numbers had gotten pretty good and real substantial backslide. the fault lies with the owners. what the rules idea is you open

the nfl denies these allegations.rmer head coach of the miami dolphins who is suing the nfl and his attorneys douglas wigder and john alectorokas. you know what a huge risk you're taking. there was a lawyer quoted in "the new york times" is who says i'm extremely surprised he would put his career in jeopardy. does it feel like that to you? >> i understand the risks. i love coaching football. i'm called to coach football. i'm gifted to coach football. and i still want to coach. let's be clear about that. but this is bigger than coaching. this is bigger than me. the numbers speak for themselves as far as the hiring, firing, and the lack of opportunities for minority and blackhead coaches and executives in the national football league. and we need to change. we need things to change. >> you know this could cost you your career. so why are you doing it? >> like i mentioned before, this isn't about me. and i understand that. this is bigger than me. this is bigger than football. many have come before and done a lot to creat

i think it was rick springfield said the best commercial for the nfl these days is the nfl.nd i wonder, is the league looking at how deep some of the coaching staff has become, and the way in which there is very little edge, you end up going into overtime a lot, and what that does to viewership? >> look, i think it all begins and ends with the product on the field. when what i do in the media rights or in the commercial deals, it doesn't matter, if the product isn't good and i think we've seen that on display this year. we've had some of closest games we've ever had the divisional round of the championship round of the playoffs were evidence of that, where the games were incredible, all of them, and it was our best season and post season since 2015 in an era where fewer and fewer people are watching television the fact that we're up that much is very significant. but again it is the parity of the teams, anybody can win on any given sunday and the fact that it is so competitive is where the strength is derived. >> and i'm curious how much the rise of sports betting has driven

. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> big celebratory day for the nfl.mark of progress, generally, though it took too long after years of work, the nfl was hit with an explosive lawsuit. you may have seen some news about it. it comes from former miami dolphins head coach brian flores, who alleges that the league and its 32 teams have shown a pattern of discriminatory hiring practices. the complaint is 58 pages long and i have read the document and it is pretty extraordinary. it begins with a quote from dr. martin luther king jr. saying, in part, morals cannot be legislated but behavior can be regulated. the very first sentence of the statement notes that the claim was filed on the first day of black history month and frames the situation in incredibly vivid terms. i quote here -- "in certain critical ways, the nfl is racially segregated and is managed much like a plantation. it's 32 owners -- none of whom are black -- profit substantially from the labor of nfl players, 70% of whom are black. the owners watch the games from a top nfl stadiums in luxury bo

he is the rosa parks of the nfl right now.ow that he is putting himself second, because he is putting a lot on the line, and he is doing it to create this change. and it needs to happen. >> i just feel it a call from a coach -- and i was in tears on the phone because of experiences that he has had in that he is dealing with. s dealin with and i have more piece about this. i have more piece about it. >> i want to present an argument that people make about the rooney rule. it is not my argument. they say, okay, fine there is a bit of box checking here. but it does get you in the door. they are not violating and they are not not in compliance. there is no rule that they have to contemplate you. they just have to interview and they did that. and maybe in one out of ten circumstances, you knock their socks off and a change direction. what is so bad about that? >> well, i will say, i have heard that. i understand that thought process to a degree. but i think that the nfl is better than that. i think that the changes that we need --

the rooney rule in the nfl being that nfl teams had to interview minority candidates for every head coach position. and it was later expanded to then include front office positions as well. since the rooney rule was instituted, there have been 127 head coaches hired in the nfl. only 27 of them have been black. right now the nfl has one black team president, with the washington football team, the first black team president in 100 seasons. 100. just one. and now despite the presence of the rooney rule, you have one black coach in the nfl, that being mike tomlin, with the pittsburgh steelers. so for the nfl to put out a statement in response to brian flores' lawsuit to say his claims are without merit, the numbers speak for itself. if there was no merit to it, why do you have a rooney rule? we know and have known for a long time this was a persistent problem. the question was who was going to do what brian flores did, and make this a legal issue? and the reason that i -- that i brought up colin kaepernick is because when he took a knee for social injustice, the nfl took away his entire caree

i look forward to seeing how the nfl responds to these allegations. >> myron, is the nfl that floresyou know, it's one that we've known for a long time that there's this inequitable hiring process that goes on with coaches. we have 70% or more of the players being black and zero owners. one head coach. a handful of coordinators, handful of quarterback coaches. so you have a disconnect between the players who want to continue in the game by coaching or being in the front office and having them have that opportunity to pursue their opportunities. and so we know it happened. i'm glad this lawsuit happened so that brian flores and others have exposed some of the disparities that exist and hopefully that on the other end of all of this exposure can come policy changes which allows black players, minorities, underrepresented individuals a chance, a shot at leading franchises, leading organizations. >> i want to play for you both what flores has said about what change really looks like. let me play this. >> i'm not looking for fluff policies. i'm looking for real change. and that, to me, th

and they say, let's investigate the nfl.y cannot investigate the nfl or investigate their bosses. it is not logistically possible, because what you seeing the black head coaches are discounted, because they are not in the club, which is sad. but what can be done is transparent circumstances and try to re-do the rooney rule, and have it reinforced and not checking the boxes, but at the end of the day, the work has to come from the ownership, and that is where the pressure needs to be. >> i heard something similar speaking to hall of famer deion sanders about this recently, and e said, why aren't the black coaches given more opportunities, and take a listen to what he had to say. >> you can't tell a white billionaire who to hire. this guy who has made the correct choices in his life to be where he is in life, and you are going to tell him to who to hire. that not going to work. that is not going to happen. >> and so deion just echoed what you said, it is up to the owners. what is your reaction? >> and people may be shocked by

i go, the nfl, what do you mean the nfl? he said the nfl.k the question, they bring it up. so this has become for republicans a cultural hotbed. talk about that. >> yeah, and there's a racism that undergirds this, that goes back in the sports world since the day of the boxer, jack johnson, which is this idea that black athletes are there to be seen and not heard, that they are there to entertain but not say what they actually think about the world and that they should be grateful -- that's the word that is always used, grateful for the opportunity to entertain and play a game for money, as if they're not workers for the multi-billion dollar corporation where the average career is only 3 1/2 years and contracts aren't guaranteed and also where head injuries and injuries are so prevalent. the idea the nfl does too much for black players was met with peals of laughter in the locker room when it was discussed. when you consider what the nfl does or doesn't do for retired players, who are disproportionately black, it is an upsetting poll. the pol

especially the nfl. so how -- you know, we have to really fight against the nfl, the racist policies, and we have to stand up and we're doing that in this lawsuit and saying it is not going to happen anymore. these window dressing statements of a commitment to diversity are not enough. >> especially when you don't see it. you know, coach flores, this being "politics nation," i was interested to read that the same week the washington franchise finally settling on a name, several former employees of that organization mostly women testified before a congressional oversight committee alleging a pattern of abuse and sexual misconduct involving senior leadership. some players and the team's other than daniel snyder in an email statement from the team, snyder apologized again for past misconduct that took place in his organization but denied the new allegations. and i'm not asking you to comment directly on those allegations. but i would be interested to hear if you think the league is due for a wider investiga
