tomorrow, netflix and the nfl are teaming up for the first time to stream nfl games. the streaming giant is bringing two christmas day games to subscribers as it looks to expand its push into live programming. julia has more on what to expect in today's "tech check." >> frank, netflix's estimated $150 million deal for two nfl games is designed to be a win-win, giving netflix and the nfl massive global reach. netflix shares are up nearly 90% in the past year, in potential of the ad supported lower priced tier, and for thes are sports a drive viewership. penheimier estimates netflix is generating $150 million in ad revenue with the two games tomorrow. so oppenheimier says the games offer huge subscriber acquisition upside. if tomorrow's games work by reaching a global audience for the nfl, it sets the stage for the nfl's continued global expansion. the nfl plans a record eight international games next year, up from five this year, and the nfl considers as many as 16 international games in the future. and the nfl does have the opportunity to renegotiate most of its contr

thanks giving for the nfl.r. i can't imagine them being solely on board with wanting to share a day with the nfl. if you go back and look at thanks giving, the nba started to implement games on thanksgiving when normally that is the nfl day for a slate of games and sports. so with the nba ratings being down, i can't imagine them being great, so they will have to figure out a way to be able to engage audiences much better here in the us when it comes to the nba, especially in christmas day because how in the hell can you beat beyonce at half—time, the nfl is definitely capitalised on opportunities to engage more audiences and to be able to be more diverse when it comes to their programming with streaming, especially with linking up with netflix. it's a time of year where premier league footballers are among the sportspeople trying to spread some festive cheer. fulham and nigeria international alex iwobi has gone a step further by opening up his own temporary shop. he's been giving out free food, including turkey

nielsen is going to be reporting how many people watched nfl's -- the netflix nfl games, but early indicationsst from what we've heard so far from netflix are positive. netflix reporting that nearly 200 countries tune into the pregame show and netflix reported that during the chiefs versus steelers game, nearly a third of all of its concurrent viewers all around the world were watching, with more concurrent viewers than any christmas in the past four years, and viewership only behind the tyson/paul fight. the nba christmas games averaged 5.25 million viewers per game in the u.s., the league's most-watched christmas day in five years. the lakers/warriors match-up with 8 million viewers. those numbers are notable, because it's bouncing back from a 20% decline in nba ratings up until this past week. now, netflix is bringing in an estimated $150 million in ads for yet's games. that's the same amount that it reportedly paid to license the games, but of course, it paid more to create and produce and pay beyonce for her halftime show. but analysts do expect a payoff here in subscriber addition, and s

how is the nfl explaining the suspension here? >> well, brianna and maurice, the league called the hit unacceptable and said it's not going to be tolerated. texans linebacker azeez al-shaair. he had already been fined twice this year for incidents on the field so it's clear that the nfl did not believe the player had learned their lesson in this case. in a statement about the suspension, jon runyan, the nfl's vice president of rules, said in part to to share your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play coach and enjoy watching, it is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the nfl. it went on to say your continued disregard for nfl playing rules put the health and safety of both you and your opponents in jeopardy, and it will not be tolerated. now, earlier today, texans general manager nick caserio, he came to al-qaim defense saying that the league is being inconsistent in the way that they handle these incidents and he also slammed people questioning al-qaim character for the le

otherwise they might as well already go to the nfl and be the read. the reason why they're at that level is because they're there to be educated. now, i also think that the players have to have a critical role in this new system. they should have an equal seat at the table after all the leagues you know, the conferences are huge. the schools are huge. the coaches are, you know, and they're the ones who are, you know, their well-being is the one that's at stake. so i agree that we may not need an employee employer regime, but we do need an effort to give the players a say in the system. i don't think there's any question about it. i totally agree. but at the same time, the concept and spirit of student athlete, as i said before, how did you value your college experi tions? and the more we can keep that because i think, you know, college athletics and i see it bigger now and everybody needs to understand i'm not trying to win a game here. i'm not a coach anymore. i'm on game day with mcafee. so this is strictly for the best interest of college athletics
