as for stacy coon bazino and nguyen, powell went to prison and now works as handyman.s no kind words for rodney king and until this day says he was training to do what he was to do and that king was resisting. briseno and nguyen did not go to court but were released. coon wrote a book about the ordeal. in june of 2012, rodney king was found dead at the bottom of his pool in southern california. the coroner ruled his death an accidental drowning. king was only 47 years old. until his death, king carried physical scars from the beaten and walked with a limp. the year he died he told reporters that people mocked him for calling for an end to all the violence. he said that they treated him like he was a fool for believing in peace. >> i just want to say, can we all get along. can we get along. can we stop making it horrible for the older people and the kids. i can understand the first upset for the first two hours after the verdict, but to go on to keep going on like this and to see the security guard shot on the ground, is, it's just not right. it's just not right. becaus

i'm betty nguyen. we do begin with breaking news at this hour. a deadly amtrak train derailment near philadelphia. crews are still searching for survivors aboard derailed amtrak regional 188. a passenger train going from washington, d.c. up to new york city. now, at this hour we know at least five people are dead but that number could rise as the sun comes up. one of the reasons there has been uncertainty up to this point goes back to when it all happened, around 9:20 p.m. eastern. the train derailed in a dimly lit area. rescue crews were just scrambling, having to use flashlights in what ended up being a level 3 mass casualty incident. a call went out for surrounding helicopters to help the rescue effort by shining spotlights on the area. we also know six people are in critical condition. there are 243 people on board, 5 of whom were amtrak employees. we want to give you an idea of what it was like on that train. this video was taken by nbc producer janelle richards just moments after it all happened. >> got to get out. here, hold on. hold on. h

i'm vicky nguyen. let's get a look at the weather out there with anthony slaughter. we went to the beach and it wasn't as warm as we expected. >> thursday and friday, santa cruz in the 80s and 90s. even though it was nice, it definitely wasn't the warmest beach of the last week or so, and today is going to be even cooler than it was yesterday. definitely jacket weather across the bay area today. 60s and 70s for most of us. especially you get closer to the water, it's cooler. the week ahead does offer morning cloud cover, afternoon sun, and that's going to be the status each and every day this upcoming week. we don't have any major storms we're tracking, but one later on this week we'll talk about in my next report. 50s for most of the inland valley, 60 for the coastline, 74 for the south bay and 78 for the east bay valleys. as i mentioned, we do have a slight chance of rain later in the week. towards next weekend we'll talk more about that coming up in the next report. >> all right, anthony. thank you. >>> we begin this morning with some heartbreaking news out of liv

i'm vicki nguyen. i'm here with meteorologist anthony slaughter. good morning to you. >> good morning. we're looking at lots of cloud cover out there, and that's going to be the case at the coast lline for the first half the day. by afternoon we'll see sunshine in the inland valley. showers do return, and that is great news. we'll talk about that. right now we have 50s outside and cloud cover on the entire bay from the north day bay to t tri valley to the south bay. clouds are going to stay put in the south bay. we'll see sunshine in the inland valley, tri bay and south bay, expecting to get in the 70s. if you're headed to the coastline, grab a jacket. otherwise enjoy your mother's day. >> it's a pretty good forecast. we love the rain, but keeping it dry for the brunches today. >> the fact that we're still getting showers is excellent news. >>> we're going to take you to some developing national news now. police in mississippi today arrested two brothers and a young woman in connection with the fatal shooting of two hattiesburg police officers. the

vicky nguyen nbc bay area news. >>> if you have a tip for our investigative unit call us at 1-888-996-tips or send us an email to theunit@nbcbayarea.com. >>> now to a developing story. right now two u.s. helicopters scouring the hillsides in nepal looking for a california-based marine helicopter that's been missing since yesterday. aboard the helicopter six marines and two nepalese service members. the helicopter was declared missing after it lost communication. it was delivering aid to one of the villages hardest hit by the earthquake yesterday. officials say there was no distress call and the marines have several pieces of emergency equipment but they say the rugged terrain in the area could make it hard for them to use the devices. the helicopter is out of san diego. meantime rescue teams are searching for survivors of the earthquake itself. many people spent the night outside for fear of aftershocks. as the sun came up crews went back to digging in the rubble. 79 people killed in yesterday's quake. more than 8,000 died in last month's quake. stay with us for the latest development

i'm vicky nguyen and we'll get a look at your forecast with anthony slaughter. maybe some moisture? >> we've seen some showers this morning. just some drizzle, mist and light activity in san francisco and the coastline. there's the storm system off the coast. it's not organized and most of this activity is headed into northern california. we're just going to get a passing blow of this storm system as it moves through. most of us are just dry and cloudy, but again, those light sprinkles up toward theç north bay. this is what it looks like in point arena. gray, misty, drizzly. that will be the case for the north bay today, at least the first half of the day. san francisco, same, drizzly for the first half of the day. cool at the coast, 62 for san francisco today. you'll see some sunshine in the north bay but it will be limited. 72 today and showers will arrive this evening. everyone else will see the showers tonight and into tomorrow morning. mid-70s, then the showers roll in for tomorrow morning right in the heart of rush hour. we'll time that for you in the next report. >> we'll ge

vicki nguyen is here with a story you will only see on nbc bay area. >> a camp art teacher was crushed by a 300-year-old oak tree. had that tree fallen a few minutes later, dozens of young campers would have been in its path. we poured through thousands of pages of documents and discovered camp owners had been warned about the tree for years before it fell. photos show a free spirit with an infectious smile. >> she was joyous and funky and always thought out of the box. >> hi everyone! >> anna is in the prime of her life doing what she loved. teaching art to children at camp. the camp is eight miles from yosemite on 160 acres of pristine land surrounded by huge trees. it was one of those trees, an 80 foot tall 300-year-old black oak that came crashing down on the morning of july 3rd 2013. the photos show where it fell. the amphitheater and fire circle known as downtown. this is where anna was eating her breakfast before campers headed outside. >> the only thing that saved the camp and the children there was timing. the timing was only two minutes. >> we have a tree down at the camp. ap

chris nguyen is joining us live from gilroy. chris? >> reporter: larry and ama the gilroy school district dealing with the deaths of four of its students in this past week, three last night and one over the weekend. if you take a look behind me, you can see the flags have been lowered in honor of the victims and all of them who had the rest of their life ahead of them. as we take a look at video this was the scene last night on leavesley road in gilroy and a 24-year-old man as well as three 18-year-old women who attended three different high schools in gilroy. officials telling us the 1998 ford mustang left the road on a large, sweeping curb and hit a dirt berm and went airborne and overturned before landing on its roof. as you said, larry this happened at 10:30 last night. the sole survivor, 23-year-old anthony imbronone -- imbronone, rather, has been arrested on suspicion of dui and vehicular manslaughter. earlier today we spoke to family and friends of one of the victims, sarah williams who was a senior at christopher high school in
