. >> nia, the guy tears up talking about his hate mother. it seemed like an emotional moment. why the rush by the press to play it again and again and again and turn it into some sort of viral event which has a potentially huge impact on the campaign. >> that's a captivating moment. i have to say, i was down at the camera again so i could see it again. it's moving every time i see it. this whole idea of whether or not it will change the campaign, everybody is thinking what happened with hillary clinton, muskie in '72 when he cried after there were some things written about his wife. in those instances they definitely did change the course of the campaign. i think for gingrich, because they sort of fed into narratives or changed narratives at least for hillary clinton, who was seen as a little detached, there she was crying so it humanized her. i think for newt gingrich, his problem is he's had negative ads dumped on his head, calling up questions about his ethics and record in congress. he hasn't had a problem of whether or not he's a real humanized figure. i don't think it wi

and nia-malika henderson, reporter for "the washington post." >> thanks. >> it's great to be here. >>ver going to be able to unite behind just one of these candidates? >> well, at some point they'll obviously have to when this thing goes to the general. and that's what you see mitt romney already trying to look forward to. he's running this race like he's already in the general, like his opponent is already obama. but you have all these other candidates. perry, paul, gingrich and santorum fighting amongst themselves for a coal coalesced conservative base. this is a vote really that looks a lot like the huckabee vote in 2008. he got about 30% of the vote. of course, lost in 2008 to john mccain. he got about 33% of the vote. i think you'll be looking at a split vote going into this primary on saturday. but again, this ultimately benefits mitt romney. in some ways, ultimately i think also benefits barack obama. the longer this thing goes on, the weaker mitt romney is because he's going to have to pivot to the right. he's going to have to pivot to evangelicals, and piv to the tea party. h

now nia, they are talking very confident after last night's debate.ould newton make a comeback in these four days? >> you know, i think it's still early. we have three full days of campaigning left. i think newt gingrich has proven that he can be a nimble campaigner n that he has been lazarus-like in his ability to claw his way back to the top. no, he doesn't have any more debates and, yes, a mitt romney is a much-improved candidate. we saw that last night. he's certainly confident and bordering on cocky out there on the stump today saying he won that debate that it was delightful. i think newt gingrich still has a message, he still has an audience. he's been drawing really large crowds down there. >> you've been down there covering it in florida. tell us about the contrast if there is any, between the gingrich gatherings and the gatherings for willard. >> there are certainly different types of crowds. newt's crowds are more blue collar, working evangelicals. and mitt romney's crowds are much more well healed crowds. wealthier. upper middle class folk

it would be generally certainly as nia said place to a narrative about mitt romney. i would argue that it was less than romney was off the cuff and more that he was very comfortable. he was heading into a large win in new hampshire. he had just come from a very, albeit, narrow win for him in iowa, and he was speak about br a chamber of commerce. he is generally comfortable in a business setting. i think it was a misstep on his part, and i think his campaign is in a position now where it's very hard for them to complain when something is taken out of context because his initial campaign ad quoted president obama out of context, and i think this is where it's problematic for them going forward. >> dow seem to remember that. on new hampshire, primary night, as on iowa caucus night, msnbc went not with straight reporters in the hosting role, but with five liberal commentators from its prime timelineup. that led to a situation like this, i'm going to play for you, when john, the former white house chief of staff, and the first bush administration was being interviewed. ch
