good morning, nic. >> reporter: good morning. this announcement is perhaps the strongest announcement that the saudis continue with this air campaign. just yesterday perhaps a lack of intelligence perhaps a slightly inaccurate weapons systems led to the killing of six children who were in a school that was very close to a military target that the houthis had been using. we also heard from a southern separatist commander who is essentially on the same side as the saudis here fighting the houthis that they had hit 20 of his tanks. that he said was because of a lack of coordination on the ground with the saudi air force. but we're also hearing of saudi successes targeting the houthis around the port city targeting around a key air base that was used until very recently by u.s. special forces much quieter in aden today. that air base now in the hands of the sort of groups if you will are supporting behind the saudis at the moment. so you can see that the airstrikes are making a difference. but what we've heard now from the deputy sec

cnn's nic robertson is following developments in italy for us right now. also here with me in new york is terrorism analyst paul cruickshank. is the massive terrorism operation still going on? >> it is still going on. at least that's what we understand from the italian a authorities. they say that they are targeting 18 different people, that they're trying to round up here. this is a group that they say they've had under surveillance since 2005 and had wire taps on various members until 2012, but then they say they had other means of gathering information and intelligence on what they were doing and what they were planning. they say that the group was sending money to pakistan, that they were planning attacks from italy, even traveling to pakistan to perpetrate the attacks. it does seem that the italian authorities have -- should have by this stage a wealth of information, that it really should allow them to hone in on this group. they're describing this as the largest thing of this nature they've ever done, randi. >> and nic, you said they've been watchin

let's head to saudi arabia now and nic robertson to tell us more. hi nic. >> reporter: hi carol.270 al qaeda prisoners are among them a senior al qaeda leader in yemen who's been in prison for about four years were sprung from jail bli by al qaeda operatives. this is a coastal town. it is a town that is perhaps the strong hold of the southern separatist movement who are fighting on the side of the ousted president, president hati. what we're seeing is by al qaeda breaking their comrades out of jail it appears they are taking advantage of the breakdown of security in the country at the moment. we're also getting those same reports that the president's compound president's had his compound in the southern port city of aiden. this is the last presidential compound he was living in before he fled the country a few days ago. has reportedly been overrun by houthi rebels. it is not in itself tactically significant. however, it also is in an area that is a strong hold of the southern separatists who are on president hati's side and the side of the southern forces. we're seeing increased

. >> let's bring in senior international correspondent nic robertson. what else do we know about khaled batraf sni. >> reporter: it say senior al qaeda leader in yemen, somebody the government locked up he was helping establish training camps and that is exactly what al qaeda is going to continue to do particularly at the moment because there is this high level of conflict now, the government is essentially broken down the huuti rebels are fighting the southern separatists in the town where the jailbreak took place, where bartarfi got out of jail. that tells you a lot about the situation. what al qaeda has done in the past is take advantage of instability in the country and gain control, gain a stronger foothold and that has everyone very worried at the moment. the saudis say their air campaign continues that they've been targeting the huuthi leadership and using noncombat special forces on the ground to take control of it. i can hear aircraft in the air above us right now, saudi jets continuing to fly from here into yemen, but also importantly, the sau

our nic robertson has more. >> reporter: more cameras than tanks.rst time since air strikes began, saudi arabia's army is giving access to journalists. for local reporters the army is a point of national pride. big guns. banging out big shells into yemen. for now, this army standing back to fight. we don't have orders to move forward. right now we are in a defensive position. we don't have any order to go on the offensive for now. when it comes to sustaining the fight, saudi arabia has deep pockets. it's the world's third largest defense spender behind the united states and china. according to the institute of strategic studies, it spends 10% of gdp on defense. that's a massive $80.8 billion. the desert kingdom has more than 400,000 servicemen. 225,000 in the army 125,000 national guard, 30,000 each in the navy and air force, but is still looking for partners to bolster its coalition. pakistan recently declined a request for troops. on the static frontlines that we visited, looking down on to shut up yemeni villages a long drawn out fight is looming

nic robertson is a few miles from the yemeni boarder in saudi arabia he joins me on the phone. nick to you, yemen has the really full attention of the u.n. security council right now. the red cross is demanding a stop to the fighting. but after days and days of being bombarded by the saudi air strikes it doesn't seem like the houthis are responding at all. >> reporter: no in fact the houthis are not being stopped by the saudi air strikes. the saudi air strikes are continuing to do they have the heaviest round of bombardment around the capital last night. they were targeting military base bases, weapons scud missiles on the loose, houthi command and control sites. the real fighting is around the southern port city of adener where officials say the humanitarian situation is the most desperate. local officials say more than 100 people died more than 1,000 wounded. the reason it appears fighting around the port city of aden is the most intense is because there are -- that is a strong hold at the moment of the southern separatists who are, if you will fighting in support of the pres

senior international correspondent nic robertson is looking at all of this for us. didn't president rouhani go as far as to say that all sanctions against the country needed to be lifted all at once? >> reporter: and right at the get-go, before iran committed anything on the ground. one of the things it's supposed to do is to give weapons -- rather inspectors access to facilities in the country. that's a statement to be built in to the final agreement. iran is really wanting to get its cake before it paid for it, if you will. certainly that's not going to be something that will be particularly easy for president obama to sell. what president rouhani has said today is that, come that final agreement, the 30th of june, he will only sign up to it if there's an agreement to lift all the sanctions. the supreme leader in iran today said he didn't mind if the deal worked or p the agreement didn't work. that's not a ringing endorsement. iran definitely for its own internal cell, putting out a strong and tough line. the reality is with sanctions there are many, many differen
