nic robertson joins me from baton rouge.stand you yourself were caught in that tense moment between police and protesters. describe what was going on. >> reporter: the anxiety was evident on friday night, hundreds of demonstrators squaring off against riot police. at one point there was a negotiation between one protester who was leading the group so to speak and the riot police. as they started to disperse, the water bottles came out. that escalated the situation. flashes of what could have been very, very bad. eventually the protest ended a few hours after it began. here the message from the family of atton sterling is that violence should not beget violence and hate should not beget hate. i sadd sat down with the mother of his eldest son who is still underbly very raw with emotion. in one of her first sit-down interviews since the death of atton sterling, she is still raw with emotion. >> my heart is really heavy right now. >> reporter: next to her attorney chris turner she speaks frankly with cnn about the killing of her

cnn's nic robertson joins us now from london. in office as home secretary for quite some time. what do we know about her? >> reporter: this is a woman who plays her cards close to her chest who generally doesn't come out and talk to the media very often. she's really highly regarded as somebody who, once they give their word, she keeps her word. she's somebody who's seen as working very hard behind the scenes, somebody who's perhaps at times. better read-in than some of the officials who work for her. she's respected. she's seen as somebody who can bring the party together and that's what we're already seeing here. she's already and she brought on the man who was working against her in the lead campaign, boris johnson being given a very senior role. the british foreign secretary. and that is the top job. he was one of the remaining people. so they are sort of playing it, bringing both sides of the camp back together to try to unify the conservative party. also talking about a more compassionate time of conservativism where the po

. >> our nic anderson joins us from paris with the latest. becky, we're being told anti-terror prosecutors have taken over the investigation into what happened in nice. what more can you tell us? >> well, this was certainly attack that caused absolute terror. 80 dead, including children. and 18, we are told, critically wounded in this awful attack. this was carnage on the prom in addition des anglais, which is the main thoroughfare along the beach in nice in the south of trans. thousands gathered to celebrate bastille day and to watch the fireworks display. this was around 10:00 at night. it is now 7:00 in the morning and france waking up to the front bajs in the newspapers today, which simply are headlining horror, carnage in nice, and a deadly 14th of july in this southern beach. we do know that this white truck was along the promenade des anglais relatively slowly for as long as two kilometers. this was an area, a road which we are told had been cordoned off. so it is unclear at this point how the truck actually made it on to that road. on
