cnn's senior international correspondent nic robertson is there. >> reporter: well, this incident doesn't appear linked to the recent rise in tension over access to temple mount. the police say they're investigating this incident. they say the young palestinian man who was shot and killed attacked them with a knife. you can see the policeman gets out, points his weapon, fires. the man drops to the ground.

we have nic robertson joining us now from jerusalem. morning, nic. >> reporter: good morning, john. what john kerry is expected to do is meet with the palestinian authority president abbas. we heard speeches and by the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu that have been very strong. the rhetoric has been strong and barbed and aimed at each other to religious sites and rising of tensions about access to the sites in jerusalem. secretary kerry will want to try to find a way to bring the rhetoric down in the hope that will ease some of the tensions on the ground here. those tensions are fueled by the fact that the israeli prime minister has said in the past to the united states and everyone else, israel should have the right to build where it wants in jerusalem. so that, again, will be something that will undoubtedly come up in discussions. as for the u.n. commission planning and hoping to come to israel to investigate the 2,000 deaths in the gaza conflict over the 50 days in summer, the israeli position on that, the foreign ministry

our cnn international correspondent nic robertson is live from jerusalem. what's the latest, nic?> reporter: john, the fiery rhetoric and current tensions are literally and figuratively as well igniting the sort of tinderbox situation on the ground. overnight, an ancient synagogue was fire-bombed and a mosque torched. a community of about 200 people. it's essentially been burned beyond use is how we understand the situation at the moment. what you had last night and yesterday, the palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas accused israel of trying to foment and set a religious war over access to religious sites in jerusalem. within hours of that, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said that prime minister abbas is lying, that he is an unreasonable partner for peace at the moment. that he is not helping the situation that he's inflaming the situation. so you have this very strong language by both leaders, and the tensions on the ground, because of the recent killings, now rutting, it appears at least, on face value and certainly that's the read everyone has here, that rel

to talk more about this i'm joined by an anchor in iran and nic robertson reporting on any developments in the talks. nic, we will begin with you. this seems close but it also seems far from what we're hearing. what are you hearing? >> reporter: it does seem far. the deadline is tomorrow night. the deadline is really, really close, indeed. but the music has been anything but optimistic. secretary nation is meeting with the eu representative and the foreign minister later today. this is their fifth meeting. but no one at the moment is indicating this is likely to be a breakthrough of any description. quite the opposite. secretary kerry yesterday was particularly downbeat describing the serious gaps that remain. this is what he said. >> we've been obviously having difficult talks here, complicated topic. we're work hard. we hope we're making careful progress. but we have big gaps. we still have some serious gaps. which we're working to close. good thing is, the p5 plus one are working in concert and we will not say anything about the discussions while they're going on. but a lot of seriou

let's start with cnn correspondent nic robertson. he is in vienna this morning. nic, does it look like a deal will be made today or is the gap just too wide? >> reporter: the gap really appears to be too wide, deb. this is what we are hearing. the chinese foreign minister arrived this morning. when he arrived, he said he was bringing with him the chinese proposals to find a way to a final deal. even the chinese are saying the gaps are big and time is really running out. the focus does seem to be right now on getting an extension. secretary of state john kerry did meet with the chinese counterpart this morning. he had a brief meeting with the eu head here. now he's into his seventh meeting. this one his second bilateral with his iranian counterpart. the foreign minister zarif. if there is any chance of anything changing, it is when the two of them are meeting now. nobody is really expecting that. after this meeting, secretary kerry will meet with the p-5 plus one countries here. the chinese, russians, british, french and the germans all meeting together. sort of la

i want to bring in senior correspondent nic robertson in vienna. any progress at all, nic? >> reporter: another tri-lateral meeting that secretary kerry is involved in with the eu top negotiator here. that is the second of these meetings that secretary kerry has had. he met with the pair of them in the tri-lateral meeting yesterday. we understand he is trying to close the gaps and differences. we are told the technical agenda here has been agreed. the tough points on negotiation are still outstanding. the russian deputy foreign minister said the meetings held are in a tension situation. the talks are very tough. you have the british foreign secretary and french foreign minister arriving today. british foreign minister feels at the moment the best that can be hoped for if there is some progress in the next couple of days is for an extension to the talks. secretary kerry is saying he is not looking for an extension right now. he is looking to meet the deadline on monday. he said we want to deal, but not any deal. certainly whatever deal it is, has to close down iran's possibl

nic robertson, thank you so much. this latest isis murder video is significantly different from earlier propaganda displays. the killers have given investigators new clues to work with. cnn's brian todd has been looking into that. what have you found? >> western intelligence officials are looking closely at the video, sharing some information with us. there is a lot of to go over because of all the differences between this and the previous beheading videos. a u.s. intelligence official tells me one similarity, they believe this man in the latest release is the same person shown in previous execution videos. we have to warn you, some viewers might find some images in this story disturbing. the video, like the others before it, is grotesque and disturbing. the beheading by isis of american peter kassig is presided by a militant we've come to know, jihadi john. >> this is peter kassig, a u.s. citizen of your country. >> reporter: but there are strong differences between this video and those depicting the killings of jame

joining us is cnn national correspondent nic robertson. nic, you know, a human tragedy of horrible proportions. what is the isis plan? how does this fit in to where they're headed? >> this is part of a much larger propaganda message. this particular video makes it different from the previous ones. there say narrative here that tells how isis grew from iraq and then into syria, of where it plans to go. this video comes hard on the heels last week of five different radical islamist groups in algeria and libya and saudi arabia, in yemen and in egypt, all pledging loyalty towards isis. they promote that idea. they threaten the united states. they threaten great britain, they threaten to bring attacks to our streets. this is different as well in as much as we don't hear peter kassig speak. we are told what we're seeing is the aftermath of his execution. it's also the most barbaric video we've seen before today, almost made in a movie hollywood-esque style where there are cold-blooded executions of syrian military officials. >> and the message is

i want to go to vienna with our senior correspondent nic robertson. at is the sticking point here, nic? >> reporter: christine, it seems to be more along the line of sanctions when they would be lifted. from what we hear, the technical issues and majority of those have been agreed. there is no lack of talks going on here. yesterday, the iranians had bilaterals with the russians, germans and french and british and u.s. delegation here. talks are happening. today, the deputy foreign ministers of russia and iran are talking. what the iranian delegation wants and what they are under pressure from tehran is getting the banking and eu and energy sanctions lifted. secretary of state john kerry made it very clear if there is agreement, those sanctions would be limited as a matter of process over a period of time. it does appear as if there is a gap there. on monday, secretary kerry met with british secretary philip hammond. he has been quoted saying he feels an agreement doesn't seem to be close. he said if there is enough progress in these talks over the next

joining me now is our nic robertson from washington and intelligence and security analyst bob baer in irvine, california. bob, if i can start with you, looking at the differences in the video, what do they tell you, if anything, about the state of isis now and if it's under any sort of presh snur. >> jim, i think they are definitely under pressure. they failed in the siege of kobani and until beirut. this execution looks to me, or at least the publication of it, as an act of desperation. they didn't plan the propaganda around this. so they are lashing out at this point. and what i think this means is the bombings are having an effect on them. >> nic, do you agree? do you see signs of the campaign working? >> i think there's an element here that isis has wanted to show that it's resisting. it doesn't go in any sort of detail or add mit the casualties in the bombings and has invited the united states to send more troops into the area and they are ready for them. but this seems to be done rather than addressing the real issues facing them right now, an intensive air campaign and disrupti

nic robertson is standing by. ll our viewers what's happened over the past 24 hours. >> reporter: well, over the past 24 hours, wolf, an israeli border officer has been arrested, and in court today, the judge was asked if the soldier could be held for another six days. that has been granted. now, this soldier hasn't been charged. he is under suspicion but he is innocent until proven guilty. we know very, very few details about the investigation. his lawyer appeared on channel 2 television here, national television, just half an hour ago saying that there has been a denial of live rounds shot, there has been a denial of ammunition killing someone. so the lawyer is quite clear on that point. we've also heard from the soldier's family, his mother and father appear in silhouette. the mother is very clearly distraught. she is crying. she says that she feels stabbed in the back for all that her son has done for the country. she feels he is being let down right now. but there are other details that we've also become aware

well, for the latest on the talks let's go to senior international correspondent nic robertson, who's in vienna. and nic, it is just after 8:00 in the morning in vienna, and it's fast running out of time. where do these talks stand right now and how likely is it that the two sides can agree on an extension of time? because that seems to be all they're left with at this point. >> reporter: rosemary, it's 16 hours to go until the deadline expires at midnight tonight. the iranian state news agency said that during the meeting the bilateral meeting yesterday between foreign minister zarif and u.s. secretary of state john kerry that they did discuss ways of keeping the talks going. and we know from a senior state department official as well, they said in the circumstances it's been tough going in these talks, that the gaps are still big, that they've been working to reduce those gaps, but they said in those circumstances it would be quite normal to talk about the possibility of extensions, what else can be done. so that very much seems to be right now that the discussions focus on that, on

. >> want to bring in correspondent nic robertson in jerusalem. eo? >> this is growing out of what appears, what we're told was a domestic dispute in a town north of israel. police say they're investigating. that they have moved reinforcements into that area. they say that this incident happened in the early hours of the morning. what they describe as happening, the policeman gets out of the vehicle, fires a warning shot and then fires another shot into the body of this young 22-year-old man. there are four police officers seen in total on that video. they, within seconds, put the man into their vehicle and take him to hospital. the reaction the town itself, there's already been demonstrations this morning. about 50 people gathered on the edge of the town, burned tires. another demonstration is expected later this afternoon. the incident tont appear to have been initiated, per se, by the current tensions escalating over access to temple mountain known as the noble sanctuary. it appears to show a heightened sense by the police that out on the street

nic robertson is standing by with the latest. what is the latest, nic?reporter: wolf, a 21-year-old palestinian man, according to friends and family, was on the roof of his house taking part in an anniversary celebration, they said, of the tenth anniversary of the death of yassar arafat. what we have heard is that this young man pointed a homemade gun at the soldiers there. they fired a shot. he was fatally wounded and was taken to the hospital byes h hi family. this highlights the situation here. benjamin netanyahu says he has put more troops in the west bank and is considering tougher measures for those who throw rocks to the point of even fines for their family members as well, wolf. >> a very, very dangerous situation. nic, let's turn the corner to iran. the prime minister of iran was also responding to a tweet from iran's supreme leader calling for israel's alienation. what did prime minister netanyahu say? >> he called the regime here barbaric and wolf-like. extreme language. the prime minister responded with strong words of his home. >> the irania

let's go live to our senior international correspondent nic robertson who's joining us from jerusalem. what's the latest, nic? >> reporter: the very latest is two people involved in these attacks today have been killed. the first attack happening in tel aviv around the middle of the day. a young israeli soldier is lifted aboard a stretcher. it is noon in downtown tel aviv. he was waiting for a bus when he was stabbed. this paramedic, one of the first responders. one stab wound or multiple stab wounds? >> he had few in the legs and in the upper part of the body. >> reporter: not long after, this video appears on youtube, the attacker, an arab, still holding a knife, appears to cut his own wrist. the security services move to arrest him. what has security services here concerned is the question, is this stabbing an isolated incident or is it part of a growing trend of attacks that transport hubs over the past few weeks? within hours, this in the west bank at sunset, a van driver deliberately drives into someone at a bus stop, knocks them down, all caught on security camera video. second

our senior international correspondent nic robertson is joining us now from vienna. he sense over there, nic? what are you hearing? >> reporter: wolf, tough is the word that we're hearing. you have the deputy russian foreign ministry saying that the talks are being held in a tense situation. the russians have had the british foreign ministry saying he's not sure a deal can be done by monday, that there might have to be a sort of extension made to the deadline of the 24th. so the atmosphere here is -- and the mood behind the scenes is, if there's a willingness but the question is, is iran able to make the compromises on the key issues, the one that it feels with the banking sanctions facing the country, can it make key compromises there? that's a very open question and that's a tough atmosphere, wolf. >> as you know, the secretary of state said he's hopeful that iran and the six world powers including the u.s. can be reached but also made it clear what iran needs to bring to the table. listen to the secretary. >> yes, we do want to get an agreement but it's not just an

nic robertson is joining us from jerusalem. going on over there because it seems there were these car attacks, now these stabbings. what are folks there saying? >> reporter: that tensions are going up, the incident this afternoon, the stabbing this afternoon in the west bank, we've looked at the cc-tv video, the security video, at the bus stop where the attack took place. the attacker, first thing he does is drive his van up just like the attack we saw in east jerusalem last week, drive his van up, knock somebody over, get out of the van, go back, start stabbing that person, chase somebody else across the road, start trying to stab him until he's interrupted and then security forces shoot him. but one of the people injured there in the stabbing, a 24-year-old lady, died later in hospital. the attacker is in the hospital as well. and the attack earlier in the day in tel aviv, again, startling similarities. a young soldier near the rail system, a paramedic who was on the scene treating that soldier said the soldier was stabbed mu

we get to nic robertson in jerusalem with the latest.ar, these are not being seen as ordinary crimes, right? >> reporter: they're not. at the same time, they're not -- the security advisers here tell us these are not being seen as an orchestrated set of attacks but certainly a sort of copycat effect here. additional security forces have been, israeli security forces are positioned in the west bank. in the last few hours a clash in the west bank what the israeli defense force described about 200 violent palestinian demonstrators inside a village, they say that a young man, young palestinian pointed a homemade gun at them. they fired a shot, there was a hit. we understand the young man, 21-year-old palestinian, was killed in those clashes, his body transferred to a hospital. so the tensions that are existing after these stabbings, after these sort of drivers who have been driving into people waiting at bus stops, all this is adding up to a very tense time and the concern is that this could potentially escalate and when you have situations

our nic robertson is joining us from vienna, austria. that's the site of the last-minute talks. an's chief negotiator was supposed to head home to tehran for negotiations. he's now staying where you are in vienna. what are we reading into this? >> reporter: wolf, there's been a lot of moving pieces today. you had the british foreign secretary hammond that flew in. he said still significant gaps. then we had the french foreign minister and he kept his convoy waiting and waiting there. they eventually took off and left the building without him. so he still appears to be here. so it does seem that people's plans have been changing. we heard earlier in the day that secretary kerry would be going to france this afternoon. that didn't happen. he waited at another hotel. his third tri-lateral meeting with katherine ashton. so that's their third trilateral. we heard zarif was going to go back to tehran. it's really a day of flux but i think the headline at the moment is, there's a real desire to get this done but the gaps are significant, wolf, and we're not hearing anything yet. telling

nic robertson joins me live from vienna, austria. so they've delayed their travel plans on friday to stay in vienna to hammer out a deal. is that a good sign or a bad sign overall. >> reporter: this is a gad sign. it's a real sense that there is a real deadline and they're working towards that. that's what john kerry is doing. the u.s. state department continues to tell us that. we understand this morning that the french foreign minister also delayed his departure yesterday. he's headed back to paris. will continue to have consultatio consultations. john kerry still here expected to maintain consultations by phone with other interested parties. we're expecting later today for the german foreign to arrive here. he's likely to meet also with secretary kerry. but the fundamental here is there are still have, very big differences and we heard that from the foreign secretary yesterday, philip hammond just before he left. this is what he said. >> well we've had a series of useful discussions. as i said earlier, these are very complex issue

nic robertson is telling us there's a number of factors fueling the tensions. >> reporter: jim, tensionsand security has been high throughout the day here. as night fell in one neighborhood in east jerusalem, firecrackers were thrown at security forces here. they responded with tear gas. the air in some of those neighborhoods hanging heavy with the smell of tear gas for quite a while. earlier in the day in the refugee camp, palestinian medical sources say clashes there resulted in 30 palestinians being injured by what they say were rubber bullets fired by israeli security forces. what we know about that neighborhood, that's the neighborhood where the man who drove the van into israeli border guards at the tram stop in jerusalem on wednesday. that's where he came from. we've also learned that one other person died as a result of that injuries in that attack. a 17-year-old religious student died from injuries sustained in that attack on wednesday. there have been other outbreaks of violence and clashes in the west bank today. these all off the back or part of the tensions because of this p

let's check in with senior international correspondent nic robertson, he is there. what do we know?cks on the religious sites come hard on the heels of hot rhetoric yesterday from the palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas, who criticized the israeli government saying they were essentially trying to start a religious war over access to these religious sites. israeli prime minister benjamin netenyahu responded in a public speech later in the day, saying that the palestinian president doesn't make good partner for peace right now. that he is lying about this issue. but israel has no intentions of changing the status of these religious sites in jerusalem. that said, overnight an attack on an ancient synagogue, a fire attack there. and on a, on a mosque in the west bank as well. a firebomb attack there, destroying more or less the lower floor of that mosque. about 200 people normally pray there. the real incendiary image to emerge from that is a pictures of burnt korans on the floor. when tensions are so high, it's a tinder box. the concern is that the next contentious event like
