. >> reporter: patrol officer nicholas serrano is keeping guard on the golden gate bridge, as he hase for the past ten years. >> just try to engage. >> reporter: officer serrano is looking for someone that you might not see. someone looking to contempt suicide. >> there's a heightened awareness of who is out here and what's happening. you start to look for more and more people that may need to be contacted. >> reporter: in contrast, officer serrano has seen fewer and fewer people who need help. these nets are covering all 1.7 miles of one of the most famous bridges in the world. the bridge is monitored in person and through surveillance. so if they help give a moment of time for answers. >> i don't have the statistics in front of me, but there's less coming out overall. >> reporter: david rivera says the data shows the nets are working. >> where she seen the net making a positive impact on deterring people from coming out. last year we had 14 suicides. >> reporter: the nets were still under construction last year. only partially complete. but it decreased suicides by more than 50%. >
