joining me now is john nichols, washington correspondent for "the nation" magazine. also joining us is wisconsin state representative fred clark challenging republican state senator luther. also joining us, sandy pasch running against alberta darling. she joins us tonight from milwaukee. great to have you all with us. john, let's start with you. there are polls all over the board. give us a sense of what you think the turnout is going to be like tomorrow and the chance the democrats have of unseating these six republicans. >> throw the polls out. you can't poll races that are unprecedented. you have never had anything like this. all we know is both sides are energized. there is energy on the republican side. it strikes me that i have never seen the level of grass roots energy that is going on in races like fred clark up in portage, over in milwaukee where sandy pasch is running. it makes me believe something remarkable could happen tomorrow. we are talking about six republican districts, districts drawn for republicans, they have elected republicans sometimes for gen

[ cheers and applause ] john nichols joins us off the top tonight from "the nation" magazine. john, early returns. it looks like a good start for the republicans. >> i'd be cautious about that, ed. our rural communities turn their votes in early. they count fast because they have fewer votes. when i look at these districts, one of the things that's very striking to me is that some of the bigger cities, places like baribu and portage which are democratic, some of their polling places are just closing right now because they had hour-long waits to vote. so we have a lot of votes to come in. what i'm intrigued by, though, is that fred clark race. fred, who you had on last night. my sense is it looks like he's doing better than we expected and his numbers look pretty good right now. >> john, when you take a look at the six race that's are out there, you need three to get the majority in the senate. but if there were any races out there that you would pick the democrats are going to win this one, they're going to win this one, would it be if i'm correct h

joining me tonight, john nichols from the nation magazine. thank you for being with us. you're the foremost authority on wisconsin politics, no doubt about it. did the president have anything to do with helping the democrats in this fight? >> no, he does not. and i think we should be clear about this, ed. the president of the united states did one interview back in february where he was asked about the wisconsin fight. he said he was in favor of collective bargaining, but then he also talked a lot about austerity and the need to balance budgets. the interesting thing, ed, that president obama was a regular visitor to wisconsin during 2009 and 2010. it's a battleground state. and yet once this fight in wisconsin stirred up. the president went missing. he did not come to wisconsin in march or april or may or june or july or august. and i have to believe that while this was a wisconsin fight, and wisconsin grassroots work hes and teachers really let it, that a visit from the president simply saying that he believed in fairness, he believed in collective bargaining, he belie
