abc's nick schifrin is in kabul to tell us what he has learned about this latest drama today. nick? >> reporter: diane, the u.s. in afghanistan is suffering from a cascade of crises. and the defense secretary came here personally today to reassure the troops the mission is still on track. but his own trip was almost derailed, just as he arrived. leon panetta arrived unannounced and under tight security. but almost immediately, a major security breach. as his c-17 approached, an afghan translator wearing a partial marine uniform stole a pickup truck from a british soldier. the truck ran over the soldier, breaking his pelvis, before speeding down the runway toward panetta's plane. but the pickup then fell into a ditch. the driver got out and apparently lit himself on fire. military security rushed to the scene. and the afghan jumped on their truck. the military says the afghan had no explosives. but the threat to panetta was still serious. >> just because there were no explosives in the car doesn't mean that it couldn't do very serious damage. anything hitting an airplane at a very hi

"are these children taliban?" asks this woman. "is this 2-year-old a taliban?" the shooter, identified as a 38-year-old staff sergeant, slipped away from his base at 2:00 a.m., armed with at least two weapons. he walked south more than a mile and began stalking door to door. he entered the first house wearing night vision goggles. in the dark, he killed four afghans. then he shot this boy.
