nick schifrin is there right now.ick it is my understanding we have now heard from the envoy himself? >> reporter: well, we're not sure necessarily we have heard from him, himself. we have heard via the journalists who were with him that he has agreed to leave crimea, that was apparently one of the demands of the people who threatened him over the last hour or so. we saw him in a cafe being held essentially by militia members who was outside, in uniform. they were holding him in that cafe. at some point he agreed to leave crimea, and that's when a large group of prorussian demonstrators arrived at the cafe, created a corridor, through which he was bought by the militia members inside the car in the passenger's seat was one of the militia members. and that car has now been driven to the airport where we are right now. and that car is still here, and we're not sure whether sarey is still inside or has left, but clearly an indication that pro-russian demonstrators whether in uniform or without have basically convinced sa

nick schifrin joins us from crimea. what are you seeing where you are? >> where we are we are seeing complete occupation by russian forces, not only here but in the capitol. there are outside skirts of the city that we -- outskirts that we saw today, russian forces casually relaxing and surrounding it. down the block there's a huge armory. russian soldiers are digging trenches right outside that armory. what's interesting if you spend enough time you see supporters of crimeans trying to deliver food and water thanking these russian soldiers for coming, the majority or all of russia does not support this intervention but there were a lot of people who we ran into that definitely felt the presence of russian trops was a good thing. >> and nick was there anything from the ukrainian government about this ultimatum that was issued to the navy? no and what we have seen is a ukrainian government attacking a lot of parliament resolution against russian presence but very little action. as a matter of fact what we've seen from ukrainian soldiers some of whom have

nick what are you seeing and hearing?> reporter: well, what we saw for upwards of an hour is robert [ inaudible ] who is the special representative for the secretary general who has been here trying to figure out a way out of this crisis, he was meeting with some journalists in a cafe, and that's when a group of pro-russian militia members effectively blockaded him inside the cafe. journalists heard about it and rushed to the scene, and that's when a group of about 30 or 40 pro-russian demonstrators showed up, chanting russia, chanting putin. they created a line, and through wish, he was taken into a waiting car that was being driven by those militia members, and they have now taken him, and it's not clear where they have taken him to. earlier we were hearing they were asking him to leave crimea, go to the airport immediately. he refused, so possibly they have taken him to the airport. but he has been taken hostage inside of a car against his own will. >> so it's another example of this proeuropean union, prorussian tensi

nick schifrin, big challenges for the new government in kiev. how are officials responding there? >> reporter: john, we've heard a lot of rhetoric and a lot of parliamentary resolutions bit there has been no -- but there has been no action. this government is 30 hours old. it is brand-new, huge problems, political unity across the country. few hours from default but they have been entirely focused on crimea and this cries they see it. the interior minister took to facebook, he took to what is going on crimea as a russian. >> matt: invasions. pleading basically with russia not to do anything and that was reiterated by the country's acting president just a few hours ago. >> i personally addressed president putin with the demand to immediately end the provocation and call back the troops from the autonomous republic of crimea and act within the boundaries of previously established agreements. >> reporter: now the government has demanded that if there are russian troops they pull back. you heard jen glasse, you heard mike viqueria describing this as a technical government. it's not cl

nick, i want to start with you. are you surprised they haven't found any plane debris yet or anything that is solid evidence? >> not really. we forget that the ocean is a massive, massive expanse, and particularly as we're seeing from the imagery that has surfaced in the past few days, even when we have planes flying at low-lying altitudes and boats on the water, it's incredibly difficult to identify floating debris. debris. excuse me. and when you add in the variables like the stormy weather and winds which has the potential to move debris around and push it below the surface, it makes for a very complex environment where identifying and getting visual documentation on these floating items very, very difficult. >> okay. miles, i think nick brings up a very good point, and if we do have -- if we have any sort of animation that can show the ocean, the indian ocean. you look at the size of asia, the size of africa, the size of australia there. you can fit almost all of them into the indian ocean. then you sort of get

nick schifrin join us live by phone from the capitol of crimea. what are you seeing on the ground? >> well, del, what we are seeing is not so much ultimatum to all forces. we believe this is just for the ukrainian navy located, and ultimatum said they need to surrender right off the coast and surrender all of their weapons. certainly in the next 12 or so hours the foreign ministry just releasing a statement saying we're not enterin interinterfere yawn-russian affairs. they're stepping up their invasion of crimea by forcing the navy to give up all of its weapons, that is not something that it has forced the ukrainian army in crimea to do yet. >> has there been any response concerning this ultimatum to the navy? >> no, this is just coming in the last half hour. what they've been responding over the last few days the same way. they are aggressive rhetoric. they will use the army, use their military forces and power to respond to the russian aggression, but frankly they have not done that, and we've been talking around crimea. we've been visiting different ukrainian bases. and has deli
