want to bring in nick burns, a lifetime diplomat, professor at the international relations for harvardto see you. all things here on u.s. and iran, it's extraordinary when you think about it. john kerry, secretary kerry in geneva right now. the eu calling these talks rather intense. do you see a potential break through? >> i think, suzanne, it is a potential break through. it's 34 years since we've had a sustained conversation. it's been 7 1/2 years since the bush and obama administrations have been trying to negotiate. today is a day where the administration could achieve what they're calling a partial or limited deal. iran would suspend peb its current enrichment efforts in return for which the united states and other countries would lift not all the sanctions but some limited sanctions. i think it's a sensible way for the administration to proceed. we'll see if they can get the deal and the negotiations under way right now. >> how important is it for israel to be on board? we've heard very strong statements from benjamin netanyahu calling it a monumental mistake. does israel need to

nick burns, what did we see, a temporary pause on its way to-- here? >> well, it's very hard to say. the value is it is an interim deal. it stops the iranians in place, the first times that's happened. it gives time and space for diplomacy. you know, this is a big issue for an american national security in 2014. can we stop iran through negotiations, through some diplomatic settlement or are we going to have to use force at the end of the day. and of course the president, i think quite rightly, has said before we consider force, we've got to consider this diplomatic option. i think you have to resolve the nuclear problem with iran before you can really say it's a new day in the relationship. we haven't had a relationship with them. diplomatically for 34 years. since the jimmy carter administration. it's a rare diplomatic opening and even if we resolve a nuclear problem we're going to have to talk to them about their support for hezbollah and hamas, about their opposition to what we are trying to do in afghanistan and iraq. there is a sea of difficultie

nick, thank you for that. >>> earlier i spoke to dimitri babich who is a reporter, i asked him about the perspective going on in ukraine. >> the majority of russians think that ukraine should not burn its bridges with russia, not to buy ukraine from europe forever. the suggestion is that russia and ukraine form a common market and then be integrated into the european union together. it will not be able to compete on the european market if it goes by itself. >> do you think it's wise to have links to both east and west? >> free trade zone with eu that means the european goods would flood the russian market. the border is very porous. the eu members like with finland or with poland, even,to so basically the reason why russia was so opposed to ukraine's having a free trade zone with the eu was also largely economic. i think this problem could be solved if, indeed, eu representatives, ukrainian representatives and russian government set together and found a formula that would solve the problem. but unfortunately this is not feasible now politically, because the eu since 2003 insists that it's either us or russia. ukraine has to choose. that's primarily the message from the eu commissio

burns, he joins us from new york. and boston international security analyst jim walsh. let's start with nick.h for being here. nick, does kerry's arrival signal this is a done deal? or is this a group of world leaders trying to save a deal that's so close but hinging upon one element? >> victor, it's not a done deal. these foreign ministers including secretary of state john kerry have arrived there to try to save a deal. these are very tough negotiations between iran and the west. and the united states is not interested in any deal. it has to have the right deal and that would be to freeze iran's enrichment program and also stop work on the iraq heavy reactor. that's the issue two weeks that was the final impediment that prevented a deal. france has taken a tough position. the u.s. is going to have to bend to the fact that they want a deal in geneva. >> jim, it seems like the deal is closer than ever. however, iran has said to its foreign minister that they want in this deal explicitly written that they have the right to enrich uranium. how flexible will the international community be with th
